I often wondered, who reads serious comics and why? I mean, the “funny” comics are bad enough … Are the storylines in serious comics really that interesting?
I tried to follow Prince Valiant for a while. Wasn’t very entertaining. Every once in a while I follow Flash Gordon or The Phantom for a few months, and they’re pretty boring for the most part (along with having crappy artwork).
Those aren’t really serious, but they’re not the typical gag strip.
What would you consider a “serious” comic to be? Cite examples, please.
Watchmen?
Road to Perdition?
Lone Wolf And Cub?
I assume the OP refers to comic strips like Apartment 3-G and Mary Worth. As I recall, there was a thread about this before in which a few people admitted to following them intermitently or in the past, but no one was an actual fan. The concensus was that they get printed because no one is offended by them, so no one really votes for them when newspapers run their periodic “what comic should we replace” polls.
I have been reading “serious” comics most of my life, and the storylines are all quite interesting. If you’re curious, try:

Who really have the attentions span that is required to read a full length serious comic that runs one strip at a time in anewspaper?
I read Mark Trail.
But I don’t read it religiously.
For Better or For Worse is about as serious as I get in comic strips.
Strangers in Paradise and Lucifer are as serious as I get in comic books.
III love Strangers in Paradise!!
That and Batman are about the only comics I read.
