Who recorded this Johnny Mercer song?

In the Forties there was a song by Johnny Mercer with lyrics like this:

  • My sugar is so refined,
    She’s one of them high-class kind;
    She never wears a hat, but just a chapeau,
    And goes to see the cinema, but never a show. *

“My Sugar Is So Refined.”
What I want to know is: Who made the best-known recording of this song?

Would you accept “Johnny Mercer?”

His picture is on the sheet music, after all. It appears to have actually been written by Sylvia Dee and Sidney Lippman.

A check of the title on YouTube indicates he recorded it with the Pied Pipers. Also, the Hi-Los appear to have had a go at it.

If you want to research sales numbers on the two, you’re on your own.

His is the only version to appear on the Billboard charts, in 1946. It peaked at 11 and was there for 9 weeks.

Here’s search results from AllMusic.com for other recordings of the song. Seems to have been popular with Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Peggy Lee as well.

Thanx:)

I can only find three versions issued in the US during the 78 rpm era, two of which have been mentioned already. I’ll fill in whatever other data I can find.

Johnny Mercer and the Piper Pipers: Capitol matrix #1129; recorded May 26, 1946; issued on Capitol 268; reviewed in Billboard on July 27, 1946.

The Ravens: King matrix #5564; issued on King 4293; advertised in Billboard on June 25, 1949.

The Hi-Los: issued on Columbia 41050; reviewed in Billboard on November 11, 1957.

I guess that covers it. Thanks to all.:slight_smile:
