I quite enjoyed it, I had seen on eo r two episodes of the BBC version and I had the same reaction. Pretty funny, but over-hyped with praise. I do like Steve Carell very much. It won’t be a must see but I suppose I’ll watch it if I happen to be watching TV when it is on.
Maybe I will try and catch the BBC version on BBC America this weekend, I think they are having a marathon.
I’ve seen all of the original series and am a big fan, so I was really hoping they wouldn’t screw this up like they did Coupling. And I wasn’t disappointed. It was cast well and held the same appeal as the original. I’ll definitely be watching it next week.
I like Steve Carroll a lot, and he was funny, it’s just that right off the bat I felt like I was going to be a chore to watch him keep doing that oblivious horrible painful thing for a whole half hour. When he said Bono and God were his favorite people was when I gave up. I guess I thought it was kind of one-note. I think it’s that having a terrible idiot who thinks he’s funny but absolutely isn’t is too close to the bone for me or something. When he was doing the six million dollar man thing, for example, and the receptionist was sitting there thinking about throwing a butcher knife at his skull, I was daydreaming about that too! And I don’t want to spend any more of my day wishing people would die than I already do. So that’s what I didn’t like about it. Instead of allowing me to laugh at this type of terrible moment from a distance, it just realistically recreated it and forced me to live it out for no productive reason.
Yes, there’s a marathon of the first series (six eps, four hours) this Saturday (tomorrow) and then another of the second series (same length) next Saturday. However, there don’t appear to be any plans to rebroadcast the Christmas Special. (grumble)
I have never seen the brit version and so far the yank version bored the piss out of me. I’ll give it a few more chances, because some of my favorite shows didn’t catch my fancy the first time. But right now, I’m not excited.
As I just mentioned in the other The Office thread, apparently it’s too highbrow for me because I really thought it was about the most unfunny “comedy” I’ve ever seen.
Then again, I like Joey, Raymond and Scrubs, so, what do I know?
