Who should get the last flu shot - the President or Grandma?

President Bush has announced that he is not getting a flu shot (link), so that the shots (or at least that one shot) will be available for the “most vulnerable”.

I would’ve expected our Commander-in-Chief, as well as our troops, to be first on the list for the available shots. What if there’s a national emergency and Bush is sick with the flu? Is Cheney (age 64) getting a shot? Our country’s destiny could be determined by who is the first person in the chain of command that got a flu shot.

On the other hand, if Bush does get a flu shot, the flu death of any elderly person or child who couldn’t get a shot will be directly on his head.

I think that the President should get a flu shot for the good of the country. Perhaps some elderly person could volunteer to forego vaccination and live in a bubble for the duration of flu season to compensate.

Well, they can always give him a syringe full of air and tell him it’s a placebo.

President Bush being, by all reports, a man with a rather good level of physical fitness and overall health, and with access to the best care available should he actually fall ill, he is not a high risk. He can take his chances w/o endangering the national security. Cheney may be in the risk group, thus prioritized for vaccination, due to age and medical history. Dunno about Speaker Hastert.

I pick Grandma.

Maybe they figure that as long as Dick Cheney’s got his flu shot, Bush doesn’t need one.
