So tipping waiters and waitresses has always been a given. They get paid a crappy wage and survive on tips. Sure the restaurants could pay them better and raise the price of food but at least we get some say in how much extra is added on. I usually tip these guys 20% unless they are total idiots. I always give the pizza guy a couple of bucks because he brought the food to me instead of my lazy ass cooking it myself or picking it up.
It seems that lately tip cups are popping up everywhere. At the oil change places, all the sandwich places I visit, and even at some dry cleaners so I hear. But where did this all start? Why does everyone seemingly deserve a tip nowadays.
Even when I pay my co-pay at the Dr.s office the credit card slip gets printed out with a tip line on it. I just mark through it and sign. I asked them once if anyone has ever left a tip to which they said no. Then I got to thinking I give the waiter 20% for getting me the right food and not spitting in it, but I think it’s stupid to give the doctor a lousy two bucks for making me healthier and hopefully living longer.
Sometimes I stop people’s pets from crapping on the carpet and puking on the couch, but no one ever gives me a tip. So I basically tip waiters, the pizza guy, the woman who cut my hair and seemingly everyone who ever did anything for me while we were vacationing in Mexico. I don’t generally tip grocery store baggers, people at fast food places, dry cleaners, etc. I’m not cheap, I just don’t think everyone deserves a tip for correctly executing the simplest of tasks.
Really now I am just not sure who to tip and not to tip. How can you tell? Has anyone else noticed the proliferation of tip cups? Am I really being unreasonable? Are there people I should be tipping but am not? What do y’all think about all this and who knows when this whole tipping thing started anyway?
I await your insightful responses.
