They seemed to pointedly ignore the possibility that it was an FBI investigator, rather than a White House insider. The Post’s revelations seemed to run parallel to the FBI investigation, so that’s always seemed a strong possibility to me. An FBI official, pissed off at the WH muzzling their investigation might have chosen to leak to the press. Another article gives another cast:
George H W Bush strikes me as unlikely, and he seems to be in perfectly good health. If “Woodstein” didn’t make their informant up, which I always thought was a distinct possibility, I’ve favored W. Mark Felt (one of the FBI players, apparently a disgruntled Hoover loyalist as well). I have to give a lot of weight to Fred Fielding, too. We could probably start by digging up the health of these two guys, given that you believe John Dean.

I’ve always had a sneaking suspicion about William Safire, though Haig is my ideal choice.
Although it would be absolutely hilarious if it turned out that Linda Lovelace was the Woodward/Bernstein informant!
Another FBI possibility, William Sullivan, is long dead (shot, hunting accident, 1977 - conspiracy buffs make what you will of that).
