I saw this on BBC and it made me think who was the last married Pope? Are there any married former Anglican/Episcopalian now Roman Catholic bishops or cardinals?
Adrian II (867-872) was the last married Catholic pope.
Weren’t there other popes who were married before they took up holy orders?
Alexander VI maybe?
While Alexander VI had some pretty famous kids, he was never married.
The Married Popes
St. Peter, Apostle, (32 - 67) First pope.
St. Felix III, (483 - 492) Two children.
St. Hormidas, (514 - 523) Married before ordination as priest.
St. Silverus, (536 - 537) Wife’s name: Antonia.
Adrian (Hadrian) II, (867 - 872) Married before ordination as priest. One daughter.
Clement IV, (1265 - 1268) Widowed before ordination as priest. Two daughters.
As for priests, bishops and cardinals, can’t they marry if given an extraordinarily rare dispensation? Who would be the highest ranked cleric to ever receive this dispensation since the formalization of the celibacy rule?
