I just read “The Secret Gospel” by Morton Smith. One of the footnotes said :

That link is all about the political / cultural party of the 60s. I am asking about a religious sect from probably the first or second century.
No, it really is a reference to the 60s Yippies. “Inarticulate utterances” etc. definitely applied to them. A lot of joking around and not taking themselves too seriously. Political and anti-establishment. Make fun of the system to point out the stupidity of it all.
Agreed. Smith was joking.
Apparently the author was comparing such a sect to the Yippies, using a modern reference to shed light on an old entity. And apparently, it was rather tongue in cheek.
