Who will replace Harris as Senator?

The current session in Congress ends on January 3. My guess is that she serves until then.

Gavin Newsom said today he hasn’t even started considering a replacement, but there were a lot of people already jockeying for the job.

Newsom could even appoint himself. I’m sure people would hate him for it, but he could. Other governors have done it before; it tends to lead to their defeat in the next election, as you might expect, but not invariably.

Why in some deity’s name would he ever consider such a thing? CA governor trumps CA senator in power, influence and size of the bully pulpit any day of the week. It would be one thing if he were governor of some small/lightly populated state. But CA is another sort of beast entirely - Newsom is already more powerful and influential than any senator in the country, barring maybe the Senate Majority Leader.

Pete Wilson certainly saw it that way - he went from the U.S. Senate to the governor’s chair and seemed happy to have done it.

My vote would be for Schiff, just to cheese trump off even more than losing will.

Just got a fundraising letter, my first, from Schiff’s House campaign today, as it happens.

I’ll be totally sexist and say California should continue to have two women senators.
