Who would you pick as the Democrat nominee in '08?

Gore, or Obama.

I am completely smitten with the wit and intelligence of Obama, and despite the fact that some here think his lack of experience is a liability, in reality, it’s actually a benefit. Unfortunately, congressional voting history is used as a weapon, with which to beat the candidate about the head. This is why Senators, despite their vast experience, have trouble getting elected. Think: “I voted for it, before I voted against it”. A governor wouldn’t have voted at all.

Gore deserves the win. I believe that not only would everyone who voted for him last time vote for him again, but everyone who voted for Nader would vote for him too. Gore could easily win, even if he didn’t campaign.

This one.

Obama is dream candidate but I don’t know he’ll be perceived as experienced enough yet.

Other than that, Edwards or Gore would be good candidates.

I’ve already bet $100 that Hillary won’t run. I believe the polls will show that too much of the vote is inaccessible to her. She won’t want to get embarrassed. I don’t believe her potential candidacy has ever been anything but a GOP fantasy.

Actually, that’s different from the speech that I linked to, but I like yours too. If Gore had been around in '64, he could have run as a Republican. It’s like reading Goldwater.

I would suggest that Jenna be the VP, while Ron Jeremy runs for President.

Vote Jeremy/Jameson in 2008!

I could have sworn you made a big deal about that speech on this board right after he gave it. My bad. I actually saw (on TV) Gore give that speech, and you had to hear the way he yelled 'how dare they!!" over and over to get the full effect. He literally looked and sounded like a madman.

Anyway, he’s toast. He’s yesterday’s news. He’s a bridge to the 20th century. Wouldn’t be prudent. There they go again.

I’d be shocked if Gore even tries to run again.

Well then, if not Gore, do the Democrats have an old style liberal? A champion of civil liberties? Someone who understands that freedom is the god from whom all blessings flow?

I’ve wondered the same thing. The Republicans have a libertarian arm of the party, even if it’s small and not particularly powerful these days. Who represents the libertarian arm of the Democratic party?

I disagree. At times it is entirely appropriate to be so incensed that you sound like a madman. This is how every person in the world should have reacted to the use of torture by the US. If Gore had shown this passion in 2000, the election wouldn’t have been close enough for Bush to cheat his way in.

As in 2004, Iraq will be the 800 lb. gorilla of politics in 2008. It’s hard to imagine the war being more popular then than it is today. If so, then a record of consistent opposition to the war is going to help tremendously. This will be a huge liability for Hillary and a huge plus for Al.

I wasn’t suggesting Harold Ford for 2008. I just think that down the road he will be the first black president…IF he wins his Senate seat in 2006.

Sadly, Jenna will not be 35 in time for the 2008 election. She’ll just barely miss it.

Plus, I understand she wouldn’t work with Jeremy. She only works with her husband or other girls.

Are you trying to sabotage Jenna’s chances? Play to her strengths, pair her with a female VP! Someone with an exotic look who appeals to minorities. Maybe Asia Carrera?

Enjoy,
Steven

Actually Gore says: “dare” four times in a speech with 6600 words. That really doesn’t seem excessive to me.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. The first Black or Woman president will be a Republican, not a Democrat.

Ford would be better advised to run for Governor if he has presidential asperations. I don’t think we’ve had a Black governor yet, have we?

Ditto. And I don’t know how it sounded when he spoke it, but the written words are far more clearly true today than they were when he spoke them.

I’d say Gore’s got a pretty good handle on this part of the 21st century.

Only four sitting U.S. Senators have gotten their party’s nominations since then. That’s a pretty small sample space.

And the first two were Goldwater and McGovern. They would have suffered their landslide defeats regardless of what offices they had held at the time they ran.

That last quote was from Mr. Goob, not light strand. Sorry for any confusion.

If by “we”, you mean the US, yes, we have. Douglas Wilder, D-Va, 1990-1994. (There was also Pinckney Pinchback, if he counts. He was Lieutenant Governor of Louisiania who became acting governor for just over a month in 1872-73, after the elected governor had been impeached and removed)

Depending on his Senate aspirations, Steele is a likely bet to succeed Ehrlich in Maryland in 2010, unless Duncan or O’Malley pull off an upset next year.

Bah, the Patriot Act and the Timetable are enough to show him to be another wussy democrat who is soft on terror.

-Joe, loved Russ since he demolished Neumann

When I saw Obama at the DNC, I couldn’t figure out what in the Hell everyone was raving about. I kept hearing this wild hyperbole about “the next MLK” and so forth, and my reaction was a decided “meh”.

However, they guy is growing on me, and I think he’ll improve with age. So let’s let him age a little. Give him a couple terms in the Senate, see what kind of public figure he turns out to be. Maybe he should run for IL Governor at some point. He could be an unstoppable candidate if he performs well in such roles. I’d rather see him run as the Obamanator that eats adversaries for lunch than have him lose a race running prematurely. The “loser” label sticks these days.

I also think John Warner is a good strategic pick. Southern. Protestant. Good record as a bi-partisan. History as a successful business man.

To be honest, I know very little about the guy. I don’t think it matters. The Dems. would be lucky to get Jesus elected if He came from the Northeast, so part of strategy means getting the guy with the proper laundry-list of attributes that will allow white middle-America to not loathe the very thought of him. If the Pubs can get Bush even close to elected, there is nothing, in principle, standing in the way of anyone getting elected, so long as they can be properly sold. Whoever he is, hopefully he’ll have good, smart people around him, pick a kick-ass cabinet, and we can start repairing some of the damage.

It might help to install a chastity belt as part of the deal.
