2008 Presidential Race: Who vs. Who?

It’s quite obvious George W. Bush has won the election. Sorry, folks, but hundreds of thousands of Democrats are not going to materialize in Cuyahoga County.

That raises a question; who’s gonna run against who in 2008? For the first time since basically forever there will not be a President running for re-election or a Vice President looking to succeed his boss; it’s inconceivable to me that Dick Cheney would want to run for President, or could be nominated if he did.

So for the first time since before I was born we’ll have two true newbies. Who will they be?

For the Democrats, you have Hillary Clinton - too controversial? What about Barrack Obama, the party’s new Golden Boy? Any popular governors?

For the Republicans, you can’t run Arnold. If Dick doesn’t want it, who else?

I’m betting on a Jeb Bush run. He can bring Florida along for the ride, so that’s a plus in his column. McCain is still a possibility, I suppose. It’ll also be interesting to see if Cheney finishes his term as VP. I’d lay even money he won’t, which would leave whoever becomes VP on the inside track.

For the Dems? Hmmm…I just don’t buy the Hillary angle. She’s too polarizing of a figure . Hell, I lean pretty far to the Dem side and something about her rubs me the wrong way.

Still way too far away to make a claim. Lots can happen in 4 years.

Total speculation on my part, of course…

Dick Cheney will resign from office before the term expires.

His replacement will be the presedential candidate in 2008.

In another thread, I put forth wild speculation that the replacement could be George H W Bush. I don’t reallly expect that.

Jeb Bush, on the other hand, wouldn’t surprise me.

I’d be interested in seeing it be Elizabeth Dole. With the Democrats expected to run Hillary in 2008, Elizabeth Dole would negate some of the feminist impact for the Republicans.

Next time I have to hit submit before I go see what the wife wants.

I’m betting that the Democrats won’t run another Northeasterner. A Midwesterner might pull in some crucial battleground states. And I’d figure they’d want to go for a governor, not a Congressman, next time around.

So, I predict: Election '08: Jeb Bush v. Evan Bayh. You heard it here first, kids.

Hillary doesn’t have a prayer now.

In another 4 years the Dems are going to be frothing at the mouth to get back in power. They are not going to risk their chance on a woman as liberal as she is because she would bring them a Dukakis slaughter. She MIGHT carry CA and NY, but that’d be about it.

They will pick 2 guys for their ticket. Not too conservative, not too liberal.

As far as the Republicans go:

Rudy Giuliani is out. He is waaaaaaaay too liberal for most Republicans to tolerate: in fact, I wonder why he even calls himself a Republican to begin with.

Assuming the Democrats do lose today - and it isn’t over until the fat lady sings - is Edwards now a busted flush? We haven’t heard a lot about him over here in the U.K., but I haven’t heard anything negative about him at all.

Giuliani calls himself a Republican because he’s very conservative on matters of criminal justice and labor unions.

The fact that he doesn’t toe the party line in some other ways (e.g., abortion) isn’t quite enough to make him a Democrat.

Still, I doubt he’d try in 2008, he’s never held any office higher than mayor, even if that is mayor of NYC.

Marc Racicot might be angling for that job.

2008: Jeb Bush vs. Evan Bayh. Jeb Bush will win.

2012: Jeb Bush vs. John Edwards. Jeb Bush will win.

2016: George Prescott Bush vs. Barack Obama. G.P.B will win.

2020: George Prescott Bush vs. Democrat X. G.P.B. will win, due in no small part to his appeal to the 50% Hispanic population (which is becoming more and more conservative) that this nation will have by then due to 20 years of Bush open-door border policy.

A Bush Dynasty is on the way; I’ll be smoking decriminalized marijuana, drinking Molsen and watching hockey in Canada. Ta ta.

Jeb already, with no equivocation, said he’s not running in 2008. In politics, you don’t speak with such certainty about your future plans unless you mean it.

Bill Frist will run. So will Chuck Hagel. The Republicans WILL nominate a conservative because their primary electorate is geared toward doing such a thing. Guiliani doesn’t have a prayer thanks to being a pro-choice philanderer. And even if the Constitution were amended to allow it, Schwarzenegger is still a groping, pro-choice guy who admitted to participating in gangbangs. Kiss that idea goodbye.

As for the Democrats? God only knows. Hillary might win the primaries based purely on nostalgia for a time when the party actually had some measure of power. She wouldn’t win a general election, since even moderate Republicans hate her guts. Thanks to getting their asses handed to them in gubernatorial races the past few cycles, they don’t have a deep bench.

Perhaps Rove’s dream of a permanent GOP majority will come true after all.

If Bush can win another term, then I see no viable opposing candidate.

I’d like to think Obama would be in the mix, but right now I feel that would be giving America too much credit.

I’m a bit pessimistic right now…

Say hit to Alec Baldwin for me.

Oh, wait…

I meant to ask you to say HI to him.

Freudian slips are a bitch, aren’t they?

The Democrats will run a strong anti-war candidate like Dean, because by then Americans will be sick to death of the war in Iraq, with 5,000 dead US soldiers and 80 billion dollars a year of war debt. Who ever is elected, Republican or Democrat, will cut and run, and history will honor them for it.

I was originally going to say Edwards/Obama, but Edwards still wouldn’t have enough experience and Obama wouldn’t offset that.

I’d be willing to say Cleland will run in the primaries, but Dean will probably pull it out for the victory. His running mate is iffy, though, because I don’t think it will automatically be Obama. Hillary Clinton looks to be a possibility (in my mind, anyway).

Bill Richardson vs Marc Racicot. The first party to get to the middle will win.

As mentioned, four more years of war and deficits are going to wear down the People. I’m pretty sure the RNC will get behind a flag waving, pro-life hawk. If my party can get a nice guy like Richardson to appeal to the economic conservatives, we can do it in '08.

I’m going to go sit in the corner now. Bayh is a senator from Indiana, not its governor. :smack:

[sub]What scares me almost as much…nobody caught that, even here in GD.[/sub]

As he’s out of the Senate come January Edwards isn’t going to have ANY MORE experience than he has already. As much as I like Obama and see him as a candidate in 2012 he’s still an unknown, a state senator freshly elected to the Senate. And the Dems will be so hot for a win in 2008 there ain’t no way they’ll nominate a Black guy. On the other hand, he has something most of the other Dems don’t have: a personality. Still a little too bookish (gotta court the stupid folk! ) but Bill managed to put his Rhodes Scholarship behind him and be a Good Ol’ Boy.

Bill Richardson and Barack Obama. I don’t even care what order they are on the ticket. I don’t even care who runs against them. This team will kick butt and take names.

He was Governor from 1988 to 1996, which may explain your confusion.
