Who would you save? A baby or a panda

Many years ago when the Earth’s molten core had just begun to cool I had a geography professor ( now passed on ) who in the midst of a discussion about conservation admitted that in the abstract he had more concern for an individual baby elephant than any individual human child. The elephants after all were far fewer and declining and there was certainly no shortage of children. So I asked him if that meant he would go out of his way to save a baby elephant before a child and he replied " well, of course not - I’m not a monster" ;).

I assume 90% of the people who said voted ‘panda’ are taking the piss and the other 10% are just awfully earnest is a college sophomore sort of way. They don’t need institutionalization, a little eye-rolling is sufficient.

:stuck_out_tongue:

Honestly if it were a lesser panda nobody would blame you. They are so weapons-grade cute I wouldn’t doubt they can manipulate people almost as well as the Hypno-Toad.

I don’t see you volunteering to help solve the problem, so quite frankly, you shouldn’t be volunteering anyone else.

Part of a person’s job as a member of society is to hold human life as intrinsically valuable. Do your job or leave. Antarctica has lots of room.

Are you saying I should go out and kill people?

Not quite. We’ve not yet heard from Ms. curlcoat yet ( or have we? I didn’t see a post from her).

Ew - keep it away from your garbage cans. Seriously, WTF - did a panda mate with a raccoon?!

Jesus fucking christ…

Sorta, actually. They’re relatives of the raccoon ( sister family to them and the weasels, more or less ), but have the same shitty-ass bamboo diet as pandas.

How do you know the patents left a baby unattended? Maybe they drowned first.

Are we allowed to ask *what the fuck is wrong with you *? In this forum? 'Cause…what the fuck is wrong with you? You would enjoy a baby drowning? That’s fucked up.

What’s a baby doing in water drowning? What’s a panda doing on water drowning?

Sorry, I have business to attend to.

Kudos to your well-stated premise. Now explain it to that guy in rags sitting on the sidewalk, the one you walk past every day on your way home – oh, wait, you cannot do that, he froze to death in an alley night before last, I guess everyone thought he was SEP. That car you saw day before yesterday, plowed up into a snowbank, did you stop to see if you could help, or were you on your way to somewhere important and they were just also SEP? (I mean, after all, eventually the cops will notice them and render professional aid, that is what we pay them for, right?) You get my point, we spend an enormous amount of time ignoring other people and their troubles.

Yeah, I think our social contract is just a little to heavily salted with fine print. American culture appears to structured to force us into boxes where we stop caring much about those other people, the ones outside our particular box. The genuine community feel is mostly gone, those other people are Somebody Else’s Problem.

Well you shouldn’t have let them play with your kayak in the first place should you?

It scares me knowing that you’re the legal guardian of some of your relatives. Seriously, WTF is wrong with you? That’s the kind of thing a sociopath would think.

Does the baby grow up to be RickJay?

I voted for baby panda, because I’m going on the assumption that the parents of the baby are already trying to save it, you know, because it’s their baby!

Who would you save, ZPG Zealot or a tarantula? Search the deepest corners of your heart.

Infant Panda

Human Baby

Make it any easier

Not only would I save the baby, but I’d cut the panda open, scoop out a cavity in its entrails, and put the baby inside to keep it from going into hypothermia.

This hypothetical is on Hoth, correct?

Haaaa!

Great minds…I was thinking of the same thing to keep the panda warm.

This is great stuff! Thanks for the great morning laugh, you two!

A sociopath would care less about either the baby or the panda. I would save the panda because it’s an endangered species. The baby isn’t.
