Whoa - what's your pulse-rate?

Mine’s 60 right now. At least I think it is; I had trouble finding a pulse! Which is weird since my BP is slightly above normal at my recent medical checkups. I have been exercising for the last 2 months at a health club where some of the cardio equipment supposedly measures pulse rate. At my age and weight the machines recommend that I get up to at least 105. I’ve noticed that in just those 2 months it is taking more exertion to get the rate up that high, and that it seems to return to a lower rate during the 5-minute “cool-down.” So I guess all the annoying sweaty exercise is doing some good, even if I haven’t lost any weight.

  1. Doing nothing at the moment. Well, reading SDMB and debating whether to eat lunch today or just wait until tonight to eat (I’m leaning towards eating lunch since I overslept and missed out on eating breakfast as well).

I’ve been going to the gym a bit recently as well though. Normally just work my cardio (try to keep a HR of 160 for 20min or so… don’t much like being at the gym for too long because it always seems a little creepy in a some way with all these people in the same place working out). Can’t wait until tomorrow morning when I play squash with a friend though. I just started playing a few weeks ago and love it.

85 right now, and I haven’t moved a muscle (except for typing) in over 45 min. When I just sit down in the middle of a normal day and take it, it’s usually between 90 and 100. Exercising it goes up between 140 (lazy) and 180-190 if I’m really exerting myself. It’s always been high, and my mother has similar rates. I’m not concerned.

Mine’s 52 right now.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if alcohol consumption increases or decreases your pulse rate? Does it have any effect at all?

Sixty, after 3 mugs of good coffee plus nicotine gum (4mg). I live and get lots of exercise at 7300 feet.

It’s about 55 after two stong cups of coffee. I’m relaxing on the couch and enjoying a day off.

Just clocked a 59. I’m experiencing a bit of a lull at work and I’m very relaxed. FWIW, I’m 34 and work out quite a lot.

47, and I can make the same claim. Probably on the same mountains, since you’re from the Springs. I’ve got to believe we know each other.

Of course, maybe there’s not enough air around here to get a good heart beat going!

A six-second estimate puts me at around 80.

What’s the deal with everyone saying how much coffee they’ve had? Does this significantly raise or lower your heart rate?

Sitting here in my easy chair, relaxed and reading: 70 on the nose. I think that’s my normal, I should probably check more often.

The other night, I was at a cookout. Loads of meats, sweets, and alcohol. My uncle, whose house we was all ats, had his portable electronic sypho… sysmo… sysiphus… smegmobarometer whatever the hell you call it, out and I tested with a fairly high blood pressure and a pulse rate in the 90s. Food, alcohol, virtually no activity… makes that much difference apparantly. I knew pumping up and bumping up had a huge effect, the drinking and eating bit (unless it’s all coincidence) was interesting, I must say.

Normally, I work hard, eat healthy, have a fair amount of exercise. But goodness! One night of epicurean delight took me in a completely different direction. I will mention that to my doc next time I see him, see what he says.

See, now it’s 72. Jeez, slack off for two weeks and the effect is definitely noticeable! I used to work out and swim laps 4 or 5 times a week…Just started a new fulltime job and have only been working out once a week. Going from a resting rate of 60 to one of 70-something is probably because of that, I guess.

Low Key, apparently caffeine does have the tendency to temporarily increase the heart rate, but IANAD.

  1. Lift weights and run quite a bit these days. Last exercise was a 9 mile run the day before yesterday. Some day I’ll get around to measuring my pulse right after I wake up to get a more accurate resting rate.

Resting: 54

Resting, 82. I’m reading things that are making me mad, and I’m a work, though, so I’m a bit ‘up’.

I’ve been exercising more lately, and my blood sugar is stabilized since I’ve changed my diet, my rate has gone up slightly, but it doesn’t race when I mildly exert myself like it used to.

oh my god! i dont have one!!! ok its about 60 really, but i do play rugby/cricket and am 26. so that seems normal to me. i hope.

I’m sitting at my computer doing absolutly nothing and my heartrate is 108 bpm. A little high, but it’s always been high.

64- I’m lying in bed surfing the web, staying up too late.

      • I’m sitting interwebbing, and it’s about 90.
I’m kinda fat, 35 yrs old, but do ride ~25 miles every two or three days, rode 38 miles about twelve hours ago.
        ~

5’7’’, 165 pounds, kinda muscly.

60 per minute. I think I can lower that once I get my aerobics started again.
