Whodunnit? was a comic book that lasted only three issues, run by Eclipse in 1986. It presented a murder mystery that needed to be solved by bailbondsman Jay Endicott, one of the company’s characters from another series. The title always had a rhyme scheme (like the third and last issue, Who Offed Henry Croft?), and a $500 (I believe) prize was offered to both the reader who could correctly solve the mystery and the comic book store (s)he bought the issue from.
Now, what’s my interest here? That third issue I mentioned above. Obviously, the solution couldn’t be revealed until the issue afterwards, and I sent in my solution to the case way back when, but never got to see if I was right! Anyone know anything about it, or anyone who also took a shot at the case? I believe that the killer was Walt Vogel, with VP Ernie Buchanan helping him out. Ernie replaced Walt on the set (thus his paleness when he showed up after the explosion onset; he was tired from having to do the quick costume change), using the tape recorder in the trailer to provide a voice, while Walt went to the office, shot Croft, and left behind the gun. It had the accused killer’s (forget his name) fingerprints on them because Walt transferred them there from the ray gun he “threatened” Spaceman with at the black-tie party, an event which Walt admitted was his idea. However, I was never sure who rigged the explosion that hurt Walt. Was it Walt himself, to divert suspicion? Ernie, to try to get rid of his accomplice?
I’ve been wondering about this for fifteen years now. Hopefully SOMEONE out there remembers this title and can help me! Thanks!
