Whoopi Goldberg Rant

I’ve only seen a few of her performances - “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “Soapdish” come to mind. I’ve also seen previews for “Sister Act.”

I realize that I have not investigated things thoroughly, but it seems like she’s always playing characters who are “oh-so-cool.” I find this vaguely annoying for some reason.

Thanks, I needed to get that off my chest.

Oh, and I’ll be happy to eat crow if anyone cites me a counter-example.

How about Celie in The Color Purple?

Whoopi has always struck me as a celebrity who was shoved down the throats of the American populace. We were going to LOVE Whoopi, whether we wanted to or not.

She was pushed out in a number of star vehicles during the 1980s, all of which were dismal flops. It seemed we did not want Whoopi.

So she pulled back and accepted a supporting role in GHOST, did a reasonable job, and was immediately handed an Oscar, Hollywood’s top award. Armed with this, the shoving re-commenced. Whoopi was everywhere during the '90s…movies, Star Trek, Ted Danson’s bed.

I’d say she’s ready for the center spot on HOLLYWOOD SQUARES. Or has she done that already?

Don’t knock Whoopi Goldberg. She’s got really fabulous hats.

Whoopi wouldn’t be content with just the center square, Ukulele Ike, that wouldn’t be becoming of a star of her stature.

Nope, she’d need to own the show, appointed herself the ‘Star of the stars’ center slot, and then she’d be happy.

Anything less just wouldn’t be Whoopi.

Off topic a tad-

I’ve always wondered was how she goes about shaving her eyebrows. I mean, does she use, like, a lady Bic or something? Or would you have to wax those suckers?

I mean, if I’m going to be as hip and cool as her, I need to know these things, right?

As mentioned above, Whoppie did The Color Purple which is a great movie and definitely she did not play a goofball, but rather an abused young girl who married an abusive older man. It examines how this young girl grows into a woman despite circumstances.

She also played in Sarafina! about aparthied.

I gotta admit though, I loved her in Jumping Jack Flash.

When looking at what she has done I see alot of children’s films in her list. I think that says alot about her character.

I think she is cute, not in a beautiful way, but in a wholesome way. She admits to having times when she has problems with her weight.

So she wants attention, so do you by starting this thread. But does it make her a bad person or just an actor.

Look, if she’s actually played sophisticated roles, then I admit I’m wrong.

And I’m not saying she’s a bad person, just that (on the occasions I have seen her) she’s so “hip” it’s annoying to me.

For example, in Star Trek: The Next Generation, she played “Gainan,” (sp?) sort of a bartender. Now, some of the other characters were done pretty well, and had interesting quirks or even flaws. For example, “Worf,” the Klingon officer was interesting because he was a great soldier, but at the same time he was so macho that he sometimes got into trouble. And “Data” the android had a pinnochio aspect about him - a machine that longs to be human. But Gainan was totally hip, totally cool, totally wise, all the time. (at least every episode I saw).

By the way, I have no idea if she’s a good person or not, and certainly, if you’re an actor or actress, you’d be a fool not to seek attention.

On a side note, we have a brief clip in our magazine next month about a show Whoopi is producing. We called her PR people and said, “How old is she?” They said, “45.” We said, “HAhahahaha. No, really—how old IS she?” “45.” “Ummm, for 45, she doesn’t look so good. Are you SURE she doesn’t want to change her story?” “45.”

So, with a perfectly straight face, we will have in our magazine, "Whoopi Goldberg, 45 . . . "

Yeah, I peeked at the IMdB before making my earlier post, to try to recall the names of those bomberinos she made in the 1980s.

Says she was born in '55. I was shocked. The IMdB wouldn’t LIE, would they?

You didn’t see “Déjà Q” or “I, Borg”, where she’s out-and-out vicious (in case 1 towards Q, in case 2 towards Hugh Borg). It was especially chilling because she’d been such an unflappable character at other times.

I miss Guinan.

You had me curious, because I remember lots of “knew her when” discussions by various Bay Area folks back in the early '80s.

This site puts her at 51.

I think I need some PR people.
