A Mary Sue? Are you saying Neil Gaiman wants to have adventures with a naive young English boy? I’m confused.
Don’t we all?
I don’t! I want an experienced English MAN!
I Saw the Movie
I saw a sneak preview a week or two ago and it was indeed pretty good. There were some aspects of the story where it seemed a bit like something a couple guys put together in an afternoon, but it was fun and well made. I had no complaints. I’d say it’s closest relative would be The Princess Bride or such, though I doubt it will become a cult classic like that.
I agree with Sage Rat, who is right on the money. I saw the film Tuesday of last week. Claire Danes could have been more feisty, but that’s pretty much my only complaint about the actors. DeNiro was priceless. Only someone like Matt Vaughn could have gotten that performance out of him.
It’s up to 62 at Metacritic & 76 at Rotten Tomatoes.
L.A. Times article on Gaiman.
Saw the trailer tonight, it’ll be on my netflix queue mos def.
I’ll have you know our paper is daily! Good day sir!
It’s still shit tho
That Clair Danes has a purty mouff.
Long Answer (skip to the end for short): I am so psyched I nearly mutinied against my mother’s planned shopping expedition, just to see Stardust on opening day. But I realized I’m approaching a time when I can’t get my parents to buy sandals for me.* So seeing it opening weekend will be nearly as good.
You see, I got obsessed with Neil Gaiman- I already liked him from “Day of the Dead,” Good Omens, and Mirrormask- after I impulsively bought Anansi Boys as an early birthday present to me, and then found out that Neil was coming to Montana the day after my birthday. Because I love meeting important people I admire, I convinced my parents to buy my ticket to the event for my birthday present. The event was amazing (he read an unpublished story to us, and answered questions, and signed our stuff!). During the question and answer portion, he talked about the film, and I’ve been psyched for it ever since.
I am so psyched that I will ramble about Stardust in real life, to people who have never even heard of Neil Gaiman or the film, though I often forget to sell them on Stardust specifically, focusing instead on the basic wonders of Neil Gaiman. (Slightly exaggerated: “He’s talked to me in real life, at the signing the day after my birthday, and answered my question on the internet**! Look how he has taken in this awesome dog and has bees and cats and he is really a nice normal guy except for being a famous author and we can’t blame him for that in fact we should thank him! He writes comics and stories and poems and songs and inexplicable things and novels and movies and excellent online journal entries about inexplicable things!” And then I pause for breath, and the people run away. “And Charlie Cox is super cute, and also there are actors you’ve heard of!” I yell to them as they flee.)
Short Answer: I am totally psyched.
*I’m 19, and I live with my parents during winter and summer breaks from college. They recognize that if they force me to pay for my shoes and such, I’d call them from Missoula and tell that I had absolutely no money for C-sized vellum or a hard hat or whatever it is I needed to buy.
**If you read his blog, I’m the Anna who asked about keeping the Coraline audiobook on my computer after I returned the discs to the library.
I think I will ask my husband to go out on a date this weekend!!
I saw the trailers and knew immediately I had to see it. This is coming from someone who usually does not watch movies.
I really want to see this movie and I think Neil Gaiman is a genius.
I saw the trailer and thought of “Labyrinth”, which some people saw and loved, some people mock, and I have yet to see. I’m past the age of unicorns.
Ha! Shows what you know.
There are no unicorns in Labyrinth. There are goblins and a dwarf and David Bowie’s huge schlong in spandex, but no unicorns.
You don’t say?
j/k, I know Dopers are mature beyond their years
I thought it looked hokey but my friend and I may go. We like the looks of that young male lead. “A star falling to earth” sounds like Xanadu, so how can it miss.
If you mean Yvaine, go back and read the book–she looks really pretty and shiny and blonde… and comes off as an utter bitch (with some justification, given that she’s fallen to earth and hurt herself badly, a trio of witches are trying to kill her, a gaggle of princes are trying to capture her, and some weirdo has just kidnapped her to make his girlfriend love him) until she falls in love with Tristan, the hero, and becomes more human.
A nice review at Salon. It begins…
Saw it today.
Loved it. Wonderful. Left me with a happy warm glow at the end. I will definitely see it again in the theater.
just got back from seeing it and I loved it. I hadn’t heard anything on the dope about it before I went. We were just looking for some time to kill and it seemed the least unsatisfying thing at the movies so we went.
Those trailers don’t give it justice. Not in the least. It was funny, plot twists, action, and suspense. It was a WONDERFUL movie and I didn’t think I was even going to like it. I also got to bust two people filming the movie while I was there, but that will need to go in a different thread
Just got back from seeing it. Wonderful, amazing, stupendous and spectacular! I was grinning like a schoolgirl for the last 40 minutes, and I actually clapped when it was done.
Go! See it! Now!
Damn straight I’m psyched. FINALLY, a biopic about Hoagy Carmichael. I can’t wait.
