Man, that hit on Jones had to hurt. Painful just looking at it, bumping heads like that is never pleasant. A well-earned send off.
Noch einmal YEEHAH!
Bring on Germany! But if we play like we did today, it may not be so good…
And the US wins the NAFTA Bowl and go off to face Germany. I saw it all. Friedel-Kahn, that’s probably one of the best goaltender matches you’ll see.
Allright!!! About TIME we managed a great result at this level!!!
Would someone shut Jack Edwards up?
How the hell do I get back to sleep now???
Two quality goals, one lucky handling, and bring on the Germans!!!
Whoo-hoooooooooooooooo!!!
The announcer suggested this was the greatest moment in the history of soccer for the US. After a suitable amount of spoiler time, I’d love to see a thread on what people think about that.
For now, bring on Deutchland!
I like the camera shot of the US fans and Mexican players in a taunting match, lol.
I hope we get the respect we deserve from this. The apparent missed call on the handball wouldn’t have been the difference maker. Friedel has already saved 2 penalty kicks, it would have been no automatic goal.
Well, let’s celebrate this one, but keep hoping for more!
OK, I’m at work, and I can only see the scores at uefa.com. What the FUCK just happened there???
Congrats, Americanos!
Check USA Today, they have a write up already. I can’t farking believe it. I am just back from Korea and knew I wouldn’t be able to stay awake, so I set the VCR, but forgot to set one little switch, so the game didn’t tape. It’s rebroadcast on ESPN or ESPN2 at 1:30 pm today, and then again on ESPN Classics on Tuesday.
I don’t know whether to cry for joy, just sit here with my goosebumps and this silly ass grin on my face. I guess I’ll go into work early since I can’t watch the tape.
U-S-A, U-S-A
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooo…
HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
The best part about watching the game here in the UK was the following exchange between two of the commentators:
“Do the US have a chance against Germany in the semi-finals?”
“[Sounding slightly lost and confused] I just don’t know in this competition any more.”
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
USA have no chance against Germany in the semi-finals. They either take them in the quarterfinals or they go home.
Son of a WHORE!!!
I was sure the game would be broadcast here at 0425 on ESPN, but when I turned it on they were showing Belgium/Brazil. I didn’t bother to check the schedule because I was so sure.
I missed the game.
This is how the US won:
-
No Jeff Agoos at the back. With the back three firmly anchored as a back line, and with ample help from Reyna and Lewis playing as flankers coming back to be 5-3-2 when needed, we weren’t as open at the back, as when we played 4-4-2 and put pressure on Pope and Agoos to handle the best in the world alone.
-
Cuathemoc Blanco had Pablo Mastoenni draped all over him all day long, and was really hindered in his playmaking. Frankly, the US appeared to have given Mastroenni no particular role other than marking Blanco wherever he was on the field. Although he created some chances, his effectiveness was much less than it could have been with more space.
-
We got lucky. Not the sort of clear luck where balls hit woodwork and bounce out. But the failure of the officials to notice O’Brien’s hand punching the ball before it hit the Mexican head in the penalty area was a piece of pure luck, otherwise it was gonna be 1-1 and all the mo’ to Mexico.
-
The US has some really good strikers. In past years, Eric Wynalda and others of his ilk would have missed the chances that McBride, Donovan, et al. are burying. Given that we’ve decided to adopt a counter-attacking philosophy, it helps that we have guys who smell goals out and deliver them on very few chances.
-
Friedel was just good enough. Not his best game, he was weak on high balls and appeared surprised by some shots, but his reactions and his arm-length were enough to deny what good shots Mexico did take. Fortunately, also, the defense in front of him was better.
Both goals were quality strikes, Mexico had very few really good shots that made us truly worry, and we just outplayed Los Tricolores. Can you imagine what it will be like next time we show up at Azteca???
I’m still just kinda in shock. Germany next, and after them, who knows??? Brazil USA in the final??? England USA in the final???
Thank goodness I’m not trying to win that prediction game going on in the other thread…
I was so excited I didn’t know what I was saying! Or what other people were saying!
PS: WOOOOOHOOOOOOO!
God, that was a fun game to watch. Tony Sanneh really impressed me in this game. He has played well, but he was all over the place in this on, including putting pressure on Mexico by attacking up the right side.
The US looked so much better with a lead in this game than against either Portugal or Korea. In those, we got the lead and then looked continually on the edge just trying to hang on. Against Mexico, they had the possession, but our back line closed the gaps, cleared well, and we were able to convert on turnovers and have more of an effect on the momentum.
Worth the lack of sleep.
What? Quarterfinals?
 U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!
Funniest commentary ever on the Mexico vs USA game.
(apologies - but it is amusing)
I gotta tell you, I love soccer, and I really am into the World Cup—but I just canNOT stay up or readjust my sleep schedule for these games.
And no matter how hard I try, there is almost no way to get the result spoiled without staying in bed all day until 330.
I think Asian countries should be barred from hosting the World Cup so I can watch the games live!
I might make an exception if the US makes it to the semis . . . like that will happen.
I tried to post at 4:30 a.m. last night, and the board was TOO SLOW.
Amazing. Historic. Unbelievable.
American soccer has arrived on the world map - probably never to go away again.
What to attribute it to? I think part of it is just a natural progression, but don’t discount the role of Major League Soccer. Many of the U.S. side’s “stars” are MLS-ers. In years past, the team would have two or three guys who went to European leagues (and mostly sat), and that’s it.
The emergence of a credible American league, particularly at this time when the players are becoming more athletic and simply better, has helped lead to this great moment, IMO.
As Jack Edwards said early this morning, “You don’t fluke your way into the Final 8.”
Now, if we can just get a few of those high-maintenance, snobby Euro-squads to take us lightly, and Freidel does his thing …
BTW, did Mexico turn into a bunch of thugs there at the end or what? It was almost as if they conceded the match with about 15 minutes to go, and just started looking to inflict pain.
My favorite bit is this:
Yeah, it got ugly. I knew they didn’t like Cobi Jones, but that was ridiculous. I’m not just talking about the head butt, all of the players wanted a piece of him. I was expecting one of them to run on the field and hit Cobi over the head with a folding chair.
After reading that minute-by-minute at the Guardian, I’m shocked at how much those UK fellows hate Americans. At least the guy writing it was good-natured, you should see the stuff on the message boards there. Something about all Americans complaining about failed diets whilst tossing 20 cheeseburgers down their throats every day.
