Boris Karloff in The Black Cat.
Granted, Bela’s just about as crazy in this clip.

Thanks. Never saw that one.
Among the original choices I was tempted to say Dr. Lecter, but I really don’t consider him a madman. So then, as the most interesting character to watch, I’ll go with Jack Torrence. As far as somebody I would have over for dinner, though, I’ll go with Norman Bates . . . he’s very polite, and if I had to I think I could take him. Which, of course, isn’t meant to detract from the table manners or conversational ability of Mike and Jason.
I’d also like to echo the comments upthread about Rutger Hauer.
Well, at least I knew Cody Jarrett above.
The original, and the best - Dr Caligari. But Mabuse as well.
Don’t feel bad, he’s more of a henchman, anyway.
Krankor is still up for grabs:)
coffin joe.
Well, obviously that would be Ledger’s Joker, dangerous in every way.
But my favorite is Rutger Hauer in “The Hitcher”, here again a dangeroux madman that is as much preying on your body that he is preying on your soul.
No love for Dennis Hopper’s Howard Payne from Speed?
He’s the only one I can remember who actually cops to being a madman, anyway.
Or his Frank Booth from Blue Velvet?

Fuck you, you fucking fuck!

RIP Dennis!
Jeffrey Goines (played by Brad Pitt) in Twelve Monkeys. He’s not an ass-kicker or life-taker.
He’s just…mad. If you’ve seen 12 Monkeys, you know what I mean.
If you haven’t seen Twelve Monkeys…then why the Hell not?! :dubious:
The Coen brothers have a whole lineup of great madmen, but I have a soft spot for George “Babyface” Nelson from Oh Brother Where Art Thou?
Danny DeVito as the Penguin, a role match made in heaven.
Captain Nemo (James Mason) from Disney’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. A very polite Host until he plays that organ and orders Collision Speed, Full!
I’m not sure that Frankie was actually crazy…obsessed, yes, but not mad. RiffRaff was certifiable, though.
I do like Tim Curry, though.
Gary Oldman as Stansfield in The Professional / Leon. Also as Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg in The Fifth Element.
Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber in Die Hard.
Nah, he was faking it. Real madmen don’t know they’re mad.
