Why am I supposed to care that these comic book movies are rated R?

This^. The big deal was that a studio would even risk an R-rating, which meant writing off potential ticket sales. Hollywood’s been operating with the idea that PG-13 is the target for anything with a serious budget, to increase the chances of making their money back. I think the last attempt by a comic book movie was “Watchmen” and it had disappointing box office considering its $130M budget. Even with their success, some studio heads have said “Think how much it would have made if it was PG-13!”
