You can certainly ask, but your request is unlikely to be fulfilled.
Just like real life, once you say it, it can’t be un-said.
You can always apologize but you can’t change what happened.
It’s best to keep that in mind.
We usually don’t delete posts, although we’ll make exceptions if there’s some really pressing reason. If you’ve said something you regret or want to change you can always go back to the thread and say “Sorry” or “I should’ve said this” or something.
Since the topic is up, it might be a good time to remind (or, if I’m misremembering, to start an urban legend) that you can get a note or possibly a warning for something you posted even if you later edit it out. The mods can see each edit you made (and so can you–click the ‘last edited by’ link on your own edited posts. You can even compare.).
I think there was an ATMB thread about it once, but damned if I can remember enough to search. Anyway, if you write something that breaks the rules it’s right there in front of everyone until the edit exchanges it for fluffy kittens. If it was offensive enough (and reported/seen by a mod), it theoretically can result in some sort of admonition. I have no idea it if ever happened, if that thread I’m (mis) remembering actually came to this conclusion, or if life is but a dream.
We can see the edit history of a post, but it’s unlikely we would warn a poster for something they’ve edited out a post. I can only think of one time I did that, and it wasn’t deliberate. (The poster removed the ‘offense’ after I’d posted the warning but before I sent the notification.) Sometimes I’ll see a rules violation and wait until the five-minute window expires before moderating the post.
i made what was seen as a couple of innapropriate posts for general questions. received a slap on the wrist.
looking back i would ask for them to be deleted.
then again in the general flow of conversation they did not merit in my humble opinion being called a jerk. whatever.
Posts don’t get deleted here. Your posting history stays with you.
thank you ivorytowerdenizen.
but seriously. how many have gone a little overboard and though ‘well shite i’m not in the bbq pit’.
It happens from time to time. It’s only a problem if you do it over and over.
Sure, it’s happened. The poster usually apologizes and moves on.
More relevant are those posters who start out rocky and change it around. The ones that enjoying sticking around check their own posting style and compromise and adapt and take moderator comments to heart. We had a much beloved member who started out posting in an inappropriate and juvenile way (he was pretty young). He took feedback to heart and really corrected his posting style and became a wonderful addition to the board. When he unexpectedly died recently everyone was heartbroken. And everyone remembered his rocky start and what a wonderful member he became.
Seriously, if you start out being a jerk then you need to expect some trouble down the line. If everything you say is jerkish then what are you contributing and why would you expect to be allowed to stay?
Most people learn this and tone it down. The ones who don’t are allowed a lot of rope. But not an infinite amount.

**Why am I time-limited to 5 minutes on my edits? **
[/QUOTE]
Because it’s good for you. Seriously, this board limits edits to 5 minutes to allow you time to fix the occassional typo you missed in preview, but otherwise requires you to stick with what you posted. If you said something stupid, you have to own it. You can’t go back and edit it out and then claim you never said it.
I call myself a member, but I have never paid to post.
With that, I suggest we close this thread. Any ATMB element of the OP has been answered, and all that remains is snark fodder, insults, and banning.
Has anyone actually answered why there is a five-minute time limit? Because I’m curious about why. Is it just something hard-coded into the software, or is there a reason you guys decided people should not edit stuff more than five minutes old?
ETA: Oh actually, I now see the poster right before me gave a pretty good answer.
There used to be no editing at all. Posters asked for the ability to edit posts and the mods decided it was a good idea but that it should be limited to prevent big disruptions in thread continuity or people just being jerks. Why five minutes instead of 10? I wasn’t on the staff at the time but I think it was just the feeling that that was enough time to make a change if you wanted to but wasn’t long enough to bring about any real problems- intentional or unintentional.
call me a dickhead but don’t go all jerk on me.
Can we get a ruling here?
If she’s just gonna lob it over the plate, we’re allowed to swing away, right?
Around here, I think it’s mandatory.
If you’re asking permission to sing a version of A-Ha’s biggest hit- yes, you can.
I definitely want a second opinion on this ruling-I’m not even sure such a performance would be allowed in The BBQ Pit, let alone ATMB.
Wrong. It’s definitely Cafe Society.
