Just hunting through my record collection, I notice that bands always used to be credited ‘with’ or ‘and’ someone. Then there was a phase of Band A ‘presents’ or ‘featuring’ Band B. Now,they all seem to be Band A ‘vs’ Band B.
Why did they decide to adopt this-it makes it sound like they’re having a boxing match
Just like anything else that gets your attention, it’s a marketing thing.
This has been going on for years. I have a CD reissue of an old Roy Brown vs. Wynonie Harris compilation, the original release of which probably dates from the mid-50s (the songs on it are from the late 40s and early 50s).
Vee Jay Records of Chicago owned the U.S. rights to some of the early Beatles recordings as well as rights to the Four Seasons. Among their numerous repackages of the Beatles material was a “Beatles vs. the Four Seasons” set with about half a dozen songs by each.
Oh, and as **ultrafilter ** said, it’s a marketing thing.
There is a phenomenon that started a long time ago called “Battle of the Bands”. It pitted bands against one another in competition. These battles take place all over now from time to time. The “versus” thing probably stems from there.
