Dogs have helped man hunt, forming a very strong symbiotic connection. Cats, Pidgeons, and Horses are all “useful” animals, but never really get same (oh what’s the word…something like) respect as dogs do, at least in Western culture.
Cows just look like they were meant to be our food.
Cats eat rats and mice, which are known for carrying diseases. Dogs eat rotting animal carcasses and their own shit. Maybe we just think we’re too good to eat the meat of such animals.

There’s no rational argument. They just don’t like it. The coalition opposing horse slaughter persuaded Congress to enact a law prohibiting the Food and Drug Administration from expending government money to inspect horse meat. Without such inspections, meat cannot be sold as food. The slaughterhouses then persuaded the F.D.A. that the law would allow such inspections to continue if the inspections were paid for by the slaughterhouses themselves instead of from government coffers. The Humane Society sued to block the resulting regulation arguing that it violated congressional intent.

We eat different fish and birds. I’ve never heard of anyone eating parrots and only fraternity members in the 20’s consumed goldfish.
There are plenty of wild dogs and cats roaming around for the OP to hunt and consume as far as I am concerned. Just don’t go messing with pets.
