Maybe they’ve been drinking a little too much white wine.
Gosh, it is unbelievable how blind so many of you people are to some of the most basic elements of life. Maybe it is just different experiences, I don’t know.
Yes, in many regions of the country, ON AVERAGE, “black people” are more loud. This is a result of their culture and community being more expressive and less stuck up and stoic than much of the white culture.
Have you ever been to a lot of black and white churches in the South? I have, and it’s like night and day. Most white churches (with the exception of certain white pentacostal churches) have the feel of a county library. On the other side of town, black folks are “having CHURCH!”
Ever been to black and white funerals? White funerals are mainly composed of quiet crying, sniffles, and soulful contemplation. The last black funeral I went to, the family was throwing themselves on the casket and needed help getting off the floor. They were sad, and they felt no shame in dramatically expressing it.
My company has a yearly ball, we have 300 white guys show up in suits of blue, black and gray. The few black employees show up and it its like skittles, taste the rainbow. The guys are wearing suits of every color from pink to white. They are always the first out on the dance floor while the uptight white folks need to get more drunk before they start dancing.
For crying out loud, there is a book with the title “Why Black People Tend To Shout.”
Why? It’s just their culture. Its more expressive and less inhibited. You might as well ask why white people are so stoic and act like they have a stick stuck up their butts all the time pretending the world is their public library that should not be disturbed.
I’ve noticed the same thing. I’m glad the above poster put the PC shit down.
I think the OP was genuine.
I was at a HS graduation last week (for former Hispanic students) and I was wondering if anyone thinks its OK to talk on your cell phone, eat food (wtf is with vendors at graduations? who eats nachos at graduation?!) and play games on your cell and chat with your friends throughout the program? I mentioned this to my former co-worker and he said it was a “different crowd”. Yes, I was surrounded by mostly black people.
I actually had to move my son and detour to the gym early to wait for the new grads because the lady in front of us was, well, looking at pics of herself on her phone and she was doing the lingerie pose shudder while her daughter played Tetris (loudly) on the iPhone and the guy behind us kept yelling and swearing loudly on his phone (as were several others, so it’s not like I could just tell him to shush) and everyone was loud and I was embarrassed because I was annoyed - and I couldn’t remember being this annoyed in a group of white people.
I mean, I bust my ass reaching out to a couple of kids a few years back and here they are, about to graduate high school, which is something that 76 per cent of Latinos in our area don’t do, and…I can’t even hear their names being called! Ahh! I worked 90 hours a week to see this day!
This is not a ‘blacks are rude!’ post at all. This is a wtfmate? as the Hispanic audience members were still playing on their cells and talking to their friends (grad ceremonies are always boring) but it was about 10 decibels lower.
I was really irritated and actually remember thinking, “Why are black people so damned loud?”
This was not limited to just teens. Adults, too.
why are English people so mean
why are English people’s teeth so bad
why are old people so mean
why are old people so slow
why are old people so grumpy
why are football players necks so big
why are cats so cute
why are cats so lazy
why are beans so gassy
why are frogs so happy
why are frogs so important
why are astroauts able to ride horses at night
They have saddle lights.
It’s the wine.
why are asians …
I will not refute the idea that there are loud black urban youths.
However, I will not accept the idea that black urban youths = loud.
Many Dopers by now know that run a street business on the weekends, in an urban, racially diverse part of town. This puts me at a great vantage point to observe people.
Yes, I have noticed that there are some black boys that, when they show up on the scene, tend to be obnoxious. But they are always the same black boys. It’s not like all the black boys are that way. However, I have to admit that I don’t see a lot of loud white boys, unless they are also hanging around loud black boys. The white skater dude crowd is faily subduded (except that I HATE the way their skateboard clitter and clatter on the sidewalk. That’s a sound I could do without).
I do not notice any of the black girls being loud. One might let out a guffaw or an audible “No, he didn’t!” as they pass by my table, but that’s pretty much what all groups of people sound like when they pass by my table.
My hypothesis is that we tend to notice that which sticks out. So people are going to notice the loud black kids because they’re loud and they’re black (and most of observers on this board are not). They will not notice the quiet black youths because they are not doing anything to get noticed. The vast majority of black teenagers are quiet, IMHO. I’ve noticed this when I ride the bus, walk to and from work, and work out on the street (get your mind out of the gutter). But when we do see some loud black folks, our minds tend to glom onto that memory, and we allow it to get amplified when we see more instances of this. There may be a tendency for black people to be louder, but overall, most black people you meet are not going to be loud.
So, while I think there is some truth to the observation, I think it is overblown.
Well, yes, exactly. That’s rather more or less the whole point. In YOUR experience, some stereotype may be true. In mine, it may not. Therefore, before you announce to the world “THIS STEREOTYPE IS TRUE!”, it would behoove you to maybe check around a little. It may turn out that 99% of the world agrees with you, or they all may agree with me. Or, more likely, the truth is somewhere in the middle. There’s more to the world than any one individual can experience in one lifetime.
This is why we have science, if I can whip out my personal soapbox for a moment. Without it, we are limited to the “evidence” of our own eyes, which is limited, biased, and often wrong. In the words of someone or other, “Science is the fight against common sense”. It’s a process for checking what we think we know against cold, hard facts.
'Scuse me while I whip this out…
It doesn’t help that one side tends to be much more vehement than the other in these kinds of discussions.
Maybe black teenagers are a trifle deaf.
There are 2 main things going on here. (1) They are letting you know that this is their neighborhood and (2) would be more than happy to sue if they get hit
I work in an urban mall that restricts teenagers. We mainly only see groups of teens when school lets out (because they are allowed to pass through the mall then on their way to public transport) or when there is a special school trip/tour. Other times, teens must be accompanied by adults. The mall has been noticeably quieter, so we really notice when a group of teens is overly loud, and almost always it is a group of black teens, shouting from one level to another or the length of the mall. They seems more willing to play up the drama and live their lives on a stage. Two girls arguing over a boy? We hear all about it, at length and volume, as they travel through. They are playing up for their friends, making sure everyone hears their side of the story, waiting for the laughs and the approval. And it’s not just manufactured drama…there are serious family issues hashed out in front of an audience. We are always commenting that they obviously were never told that some information should be private, and that the world doesn’t need to know your business. We rarely if ever see this kind of behavior from the white teens…the very few times we have, they were usually the rougher, more “street” types rather than the Hollister-wearing suburb kids. It’s like they think this very public space is no different from the hallways of their school, or the streets of their neighborhood. And they KNOW they are going to get in trouble for it, because our mall and city-cop security teams are always quick to shut things down. The kids just don’t seem to care…in fact they seem to see it as a badge of honor to get kicked out of the mall. These are also the kids who will stick their heads in the door of my store where they can see us obviously busy waiting on adults, and shout, “Excuse me? EXCUSE ME! Y’all hiring?” Um, anyone but you, honey…anyone but you.
I’ll give you some extra credit for creativity, but I don’t find this very persuasive.
Where do you propose we go to “scientifically” study this topic? Shall we send out researchers in plain clothes and hidden SPL meters to verify the loudness of various groups in their “natural environment”?
While you’re at it, let’s get a grant to finally settle the issue of whether or not black people dance better than white people. I really need some hard facts before the topic gets discussed anywhere.
The word you’re looking for instead of “walk” is “saunter” or “deliberately saunter into the road while directly looking at my car timing it perfectly so I’ll have to slow down even though only 5 cars drive down the street every hour and he could have waited 2 seconds to mosey into the road behind me”
I have never seen a white teen do this. But that’s probably because I have seen very few urban white teens in my life.
I’d like to add a rider to your grant proposal to determine once and for all whether white men can or cannot jump.
I live in the greater Dayton (Ohio) area. We have two large malls: The (older) Dayton Mall and the (newer) Mall at Fairfield Commons.
As any shopper or mall worker around here will tell you, groups comprised of black teenagers roaming the mall have a reputation for being very loud and very unruly. I used to work at the Dayton Mall, and I am 100% confident it’s not confirmation bias. It has been a huge problem at the Dayton Mall, as the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) busses the teenagers between west Dayton (where most of them live) and the Dayton Mall located south of Dayton.
The Mall at Fairfield Commons was built in Beavercreek. The developers took a lesson from the Dayton Mall, and purposely built at a location outside the RTA bussing route. I know many people who stopped shopping at the Dayton Mall - and began shopping at Fairfield Commons - simply because they felt safer.
Last year, the RTA submitted an application to build three bus stops near the Mall at Fairfield Commons. Last month, the Beavercreek city council unanimously rejected it. The reason’s pretty obvious: providing bus stops would bring hoards of black teenagers to the mall, thereby creating a security problem and driving customers away.
And I’m sure all the white teenagers were busy helping little old ladies into across the parking lot and handing out bibles in the food court.
That’s fine. Watching them hobble up to take the stand on a wooden leg would be more than enough compensation for any judgement I might have to pay.
How does that work? Do you have to show ID to enter? Don’t young looking 20 year olds object?
