Why are politicians held responsible for the actions of their relatives?

I saw the college Jane Sanders used to ran got shut down because of debt. Many people are saying it makes Bernie unfit to be president. It sort of reminds me of the whole debate about The Donald’s grandfather and how he used to run a brothel. Frederick Trump and Jane Sanders are not running for president. This isn’t North Korea. You don’t get punished for your relative’s crimes here.

Because the campaigns are trying to manipulate people emotionally. Just as political opponents do between election cycles.

The college issue is probably related to Bernie’s failure to release his tax returns since Jane Sanders was paid a handsome sum to go away.

I agree that the actions of relatives are usually not relevant in the campaign. The Bush daughters arrests were never used in the campaign, for example.

Because they CAN be. By the unregulated media/industrial complex.

I wouldn’t call 200K a handsome amount. Certainly not enough to be ashamed of.
Bernie’s Senate salary is 174K.

In politics you get the media to run with a story and see what sticks. There are a lot of people out there. Some stuff sticks with some, and not with others. Not everyone is born from a cookie cutter and and values or discounts all issues in the same manner, yet each vote counts the same.

Because the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree?

Not that I believe that nonsense but I assume that’s the premise they’re working off of.

Jane Sanders is more directly involved in Bernie’s political career than some candidate relations. She was a department head when he was mayor, then a congressional aide, now a campaign advisor. This has generally been an asset.

They’re comparable to the Clintons in this respect. There’s nothing inappropriate about seeing Bill and Hillary reflect on each other.

Its hard to say. For instance, I can’t fault Hillary for anything any other Rodham has done. Free Will? She doesn’t own or control them? its Something like that.

Just like I can’t yank Trump up by the bootstraps just because his sister is a Truly Competent and Amazing Judge (And ONE HELL of a better candidate for president).
Sometimes Competence skips a sibling…

Sometimes there IS a reason. Richard Nixon’s two brothers were both accused of financially benefitting from their relationship with Nixon, and Edward Nixon may have been a conduit for illegal campaign contributions.

Billy Carter collected $220,000 to lobby for the Libyan government, leading to Jimmy’s wonderfully understated comment, “These facts will govern my relationship with Billy as long as I am president.”

Roger Clinton was more of a ne’er do well than an actual crook, but he was enough of an irritation to Bill that his Secret Service code name was “Headache.”

Then you have political couples like Virginia’s Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, who got a little too cozy with one of his supporters, and both ended up in federal prison.

There is an enormous difference between the actions of a relative (whom you didn’t choose, don’t typically share daily life and finances with, and can’t easily disown completely) and a spouse, whose major activities you can be presumed to support and whom you can divorce if your values are no longer in alignment.

I would never judge a politician on the basis of the actions of their parents, siblings, children (unless they were specifically related to parenting) or other relatives, but I definitely consider the spouse in examining a person’s character.

Just being related, whatever, politicians can’t control their relatives. They do have some control over who they choose to marry and how they raise their children. If you marry a crook or your kids are assholes that might very well be a reflection of who you are. What you do or say about it after it’s known tells the public a lot about you.

If Sanders doesn’t want to be associated with his wives ‘failures’ it might be wise not to employ her or put her in charge of his taxes.

Personally I don’t care what his wife has or hasn’t done. I don’t like Bernie, no need to dig into his associates.
