Why are "press" notebooks hinged at the top?

Perhaps it’s just Hollywood’s influence but I saw a Moleskine press notebook and it was hinged at the top, just like in the movies. I don’t know if this is art imitating life or what. Is there any reason why the press would prefer notebooks with the binder at the top?

Try to hold a normal side opening notebook while taking notes!
It is more like a clip board.
Sheesh!

Easier to flip pages and just let them hang as you’re quickly taking notes. Plus, they look so much cooler than the side-bound ones. They were always my choice.

Extra bonus - they’re ambidextrous.

Stenographer’s notebooks are like that, too.

Like Otto says, easier to flip the pages while you’re taking notes.

I guess then my question is why do most other people use the other type. But I suppose it’s just because it’s what they’re used to.

Not everybody needs to walk around with a notebook or take notes in a hurry like we do. A spiral notebook might be more convenient in a classroom setting.

They look more like a traditional book bound at the edge, and if you write on both sides of the sheet, they’re a little easier to read. My left-handed daughter far prefers the top-bound type, though, and she’s even been known to write in her regular spiral notebooks from back to front just to keep the wire on her non-writing side.

Yeah, because then the pages of your notebook and textbook all go the same way.

And another: they’re cheaper to make. (Only about 5" across vs. about 8" down to make into a wire hinge.)
