As an occasional pipe smoker and collector, and frequent patron of my local tobacconist’s shop I notice that many of the best pipes and tobaccos are made in Denmark. At least 50 or 60 percent of the several hundred fine pipes in the shop are made by Danish firms like Nielsen, Bjarne, Peterson, and others. A great deal of the tobacco in the shop is also Danish. Mac Baren, Peterson’s, and Stanwell (which is owned by Peter Stokkebye, another tobacco company,) are all Danish made. Probably 65% of all the tobacco and pipes in the shop are of Danish origin, with the rest being Italian and Irish.
Why is this?
