Why are street fittings called street fittings?

I’ve been dealing with plumbing fittings most my life. I was asked recently why the ‘street’ for a female to male elbow? Anyone know what the origin of the term is from?

My WAG is that it’s because the male end can be inserted into a tapped hole in the water, or sewer, main that’s in the street.

Now I have a question. Why is Leominster pronounced Lemminster?

All part of an elaborate plan to confuse tourists. You take Interstate(somehow a interstate it though it never leaves MA) 190 that begins in Worcester, MA(pronounced Wister) to Leominster, MA(pronounced Lemminster).
