What I said is that one of my ancestors was a fugitive slave who escaped to freedom in Canada in the early 1800s. “New York” does not have any authority over it. A board of lower Manhattan residents - you know, the people who would actually be affected by the building of a mosque near their homes - approved of the idea. But that was just a thumbs up. The people who want to build the mosque did not need their approval because their plan does not include any zoning changes. Even if the residents didn’t like it, their vote wouldn’t matter. (They’d have other channels to protest.)

A great tragedy happened on 9/11/2001. 3000+ people died, mostly horribly. We should never forget the date.

It was not America’s Holocaust. It was a tragedy, and a crime, but it was not something that should have left a scar on the American soul. 95% of the United States population had no personal connection to anyone who died. We (collectively) do not own Ground Zero. We do not own lower Manhattan. We do not own New York City. Why do so many non-New Yorkers feel like they have shit-all to say about what happens in that city, just because of 9/11?
