Why are there so few obese Asian Americans?

Lingyi, I think you are confusing personal anecdata with math statistics. I am at work now and don’t have time to dig up cites, but I don’t think it is necessarily “stereotyping” at all if someone claims that Asians, on average, consume less dairy than people of other races (if that is, in fact, the truth.) And if you, an Asian, are eating ice cream and milk and cheese and all that, that doesn’t negate the statistical data that other Asians aren’t eating much of that stuff (if they aren’t.) It just makes you an outlier.

I accept and agree that statistically, Asian-American’s probably each less dairy products, in part due to a tendency towards lactose intolerance, but the broad statement that “Asians don’t eat a lot of dairy.” is stereotyping IMO. if the poster prefaced it with, Most or Many, I wouldn’t have an issue with the statement.

I’m still genetically moderately lactose intolerant and sometimes get hives or an upset stomach with certain milk or cheeses, but have built up a tolerance drinking milk (2% for me) and eating cheeses and ice cream throughout my life. My Mom used to love to tell the story that as a baby, I was highly lactose intolerant and had to be fed Soybee which was the most expensive formula at the time.

While most east Asians are lactose intolerant (70% to 100% depending on the area), this is normally a condition that arises after infancy. The NIH says that infant lactose intolerance is most prevalent in Finland, but even there it occurs in only 1 in 60,000 infants. I think it’s likely that your mother was misdiagnosing some kind of digestive upset.

Right back at you. Is there evidence to the contrary?

Immigrants’ diets change to be more like typical US diets, including more dairy. And for their children, the pace of food acculturation is more pronounced.

Beyond that, dairy consumption in Asian countries is on the upswing generally.

This is a classic issue of bad statistical practice. For historical reasons, there are a significant number of immigrant Asian Americans rather than several generations of native born. Comparing their food consumption and the results thereof (obesity, for example) should be done carefully. It is not good practice to compare them statistically with the broader group of Americans who have been culturally American for several generations.

Lactose intolerance <> Never eats dairy. As with just about anything, there is a spectrum. I’m mildly lactose intolerant but still consume my fair share of diary products. I just toot a little afterwards.

I was born and raised in the L.A. area and have known a LOT of Asians, from immigrants to 4th or 5th generation. My best friend is the daughter of Chinese immigrants. The farther removed from first generation, the more likely the diet is to be pretty much the same as any “average” American.

I used to be an adult advisor with an Explorer Post whose members were about 95% Asian (predominantly Chinese) and nearly all immigrants themselves (although as infants or small children, mostly). Whenever we went for a meal as a group, they strongly voted for “no Chinese food!” They usually wanted pizza. Like most American teenage kids.

She said I sometimes got hives and consulted the doctor who recommended every formula available in the early '60’s, including goat’s milk until finally telling my Mom about Soybee. The punchline to the story being that it cost $0.60 a can at the military exchange vs half that for anything else!

To get back to the OP’s original statement. I want to know where to find all these skinny Asian women!

Right here
