And where can I find more? So far, I’ve only found one five-minute video on youtube that features him.
There was no TV in South Africa until 1976, very near the end of Vorster’s term, so there never any TV cameras around where he was, and his public appearances were not televised nor filmed for television.
Thank you. I had no idea that SA didn’t have TV before 1976. Very interesting to find out.
I thought it was because he wasn’t a cute kitten or shop at WalMart.
The leaders of the National Party weren’t really big fans of television, for a few reasons. First, they were afraid that, since there were so many foreign films and programs in English, that English would dominate and marginalize Afrikaans. Second, they were worried about portrayals of blacks on foreign shows, and especially portrayals showing black/white friendships or black/white dating or blacks in positions of authority or prosperous. Third was the idea that there was too much sex and violence on television and that would be harmful for kids. Basically, they knew they couldn’t control television. You have to remember that South Africa under the National Party was a very controlled state, where the government tried to control a lot of aspects of daily living; what people did, what people said, and how people thought. And television threatened that.
Thank you. That was a very informative answer. Wow! Truly the definition of a dictatorship.
