Heh, I see the problem, though I think it is a trivial one.
Yes, I used the phrase “slapped down” in post #114. What I meant was better stated in post #116: “challenge and counter and question”. I did not mean it as “silence and punish the person asking the question.”
You are not being silenced or punished by me - as evidence, I point to your continued ability to post here. My larger concern is vigilance against people who will “silence and punish”, justifying their actions as for the greater good. Such people are frighteningly common and all it takes for them to get some leverage is to play on fears that violent movies and child porn as they define those terms will unravel society.
What movies were banned in U.K., by the way? A search turns up the so-called Video Nasty list. If all of these movies were released in their original uncut form (most of them eventually were, anyway), what do you think would happen to British society? Feel free to speculate. Chaos? Roving rape gangs? Televised executions? Public deflowerings? Dogs and cats - living together?
Anyway, mine is exactly the opposite of a pro-totalitarian view. That you would accuse me of having such is too preposterous to be offensive.
Couldn’t these horrific events be the things that color your view of this sort of ‘entertainment’? I could certainly understand how you woulnd’t like these types of movies after having these things happen to you and your close loved ones.
Do you think that is why you can’t understand people who do?
At the request of the OP, and since the thread is simultaneously addressing issues more properly reserved to the Pit and MPSIMS (howzabout that for a schizoid thread), I am euthanizing this thread (without prejudice).
All topics addressed, here, are still valid, although I would suggest that some consideration be given to how and why posts (either Original or responsive) are submitted.
