Were they both meant to link to the same movie? Well, Bride and Prejudice might be another he recommended to me, but I don’t think it is the one I was thinking of. As I recall, it was a big hit at Sundance, then went on to more success. I remember a publicity photograph of the director with the bevvy of beauties who starred in the film, one of them a young girl. They were wearing rich, silky, vibrant clothing, costumes really.
Oh, speaking of…

I’m proud to say that we owned that DVD years before Kill Bill came out (it was an inspiration to Tarantino)

if you see the trailer for an upcoming Jackie Chan movie called The Forbidden Kingdom there’s a flash of a woman who looks just like TBwWH’s Lin, which means I have to see it now just to see how The Bride is parodied/homaged.
Kelly Hu???
Oh shoot, sorry. I guess the Ctrl-C didn’t take.
How long ago was this? Very recent (the last couple of Sundances) or a few/several years ago?
casts mind back I am thinking it would have been about 2004 or 2005. Maybe as long ago as 2003, but unlikely. It was leading up to/before I quit EQ, and the Sony DRM fiasco was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Here are the lineups of the 2004, the 2005 and the 2006 fests. Unless my eye passsed over it, I didn’t see any titles that seemed to fit. I couldn’t find a link for a list of the 2003 films. Not surprisingly, the Sundance web site itself was totally useless in trying to find lists, cementing my attitude that if you want information, the official site (no matter what the topic) is the very last place to consider visiting.
It might have been put out earlier than I am thinking, I gave when it was recommended to me, and I didn’t consider it “that old” at the time. Maybe as old as 3 years at that time. Hmmm…
To clarify, I would have been told of it about 2004-2005 or so, and it was maybe three years old at that time. (Though I am thinking newer.)
I recognize Grace Park (mmm, legs), and there’s also Tia Carerra though she has really only done three movies and the last one was a decade ago.
I’m not sure why there’s not more, though. It really might just be an issue of numbers, and there might be more of a push to get white-collar jobs among Asian-Americans due to being mostly second generation (I believe.)
Shouldn’t Hu have been on first?
What?
You’re forgetting Michelle Krusiec.
There was also Nancy Kwan and the glorious Miyoshi Umeki, both of whom were extremely popular in their day.
The first one I thought of was Brenda Song.
No, What’s on second, Hu’s on first.
First thought: Lea Salonga
Second thought: Michaela Conlin of “Bones”
I love Asian women, so without prompting, I thought immediately of Michelle Yeoh, Zhang Ziyi, Lucy Liu, Tia Carrere, Kelly Hu, Sandra Oh, Brenda Song (damn cute; too bad she’s on that stupid kids’ show), Shu Qi (the hottie from The Transporter), and Ming Na.
Oh, and also Ava Devine, Mika Tan, Kianna Dior, Minka, Asia Carrera, and Kobe Tai.
Yeah, my first thought was Lucy Liu, and my second “that young thing on Chuck who was also on Studio 60”. Then a big ol’ blank, until some other names were mentioned, and I went, “Oh, yeah!” But while I recognize a few of the other names I could maybe name one role for each:
Sandra Oh - Sideways, and some TV show I don’t watch. Gray’s Anatomy, maybe?
Joan Chen - Joy Luck Club, I think, and maybe some other Amy Tan stuff. I don’t think I’ve noticed her since the early 90s.
Margaret Cho - agree she’s not a “mainstream actress”, she’s an occasionally funny but mostly not American comidienne with an Asian immigrant mother who’s the butt of most of her jokes.
Grace Park - Battlestar Galactica. But to be honest, I wouldn’t have known her name were it not for an ex-poster who was obsessed with being like her.
Lea Salonga - will always be a Broadway singer to me, but that’s 'cause I was obsessed with Miss Saigon back in the day.
Maggie Cheung - I know I should know this one, but I don’t. The name is very familiar, though.
Michelle Yoeh - ditto.
I know there’s a cultural difference on what “Asian” means, but I can’t wrap my head around a Parminder Nagra being “Asian”. To me, she’s English as the day is long.
Argent, it seems more like you’re wondering “why aren’t there more Asian actresses with names as big as Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, etc. that can carry movies?” Tough question to answer.
Gong Li.
Well, how many African American leading ladies can you name? I can probably name as many female Asian movie stars popular in America as I can name black ones - Halle Berry, Queen Latifah, Gabrielle Union, uh, does Whoopie Goldberg count?, Thandie Whatshername, right? There are more now than when I was a kid, and I know there’s several I know by face but not automatically by name, but there’s still not a ton of work for black women in Hollywood. Hell, there might be less work now that you can’t play the maid anymore, like Hattie McDaniel got all her money doing.
For that matter, how many subcontinental men can you name in American movies? Kal Penn is the only one that immediately comes to mind. A lot of ethnicities have had a really hard time making it over the “a ___ is not a leading man/lady”, “a ____ is not a sex symbol” thing.
