Why centipedes?

My family has lived in this house since 1958, and a few times a year (in all seasons), centipedes have made their way into the house. Aside from an occasional fly, I don’t recall any other insects, not even ants in the house. But outside, we have a normal number of creepy-crawlies and flying things. So why would only centipedes find their way indoors?

I don’t think they are actually breeding in some obscure indoor location, or there would be lots more of them.
