Why Christians and Muslims proselytize

The major religions of the world - Christianity and Islam - strongly believe in proselytizing. The adherants also believe that the morals, values, and standards of their religion are true, good, and incumbent on all of humanity, not just the faithful.

Christianity and Islam have specific injunctions binding their adherents to proselytize. This is done through various means. Christians tend to be more assertive in their efforts (particularly Evangelicals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Latter-day Saints) whereas Muslims tend to focus on good PR for Islam and talking to others about Islam in an effort to convert. In addition, adherents of both religions engage in keeping their own within the fold. This is most noticeable in Islam, where highly Islamic states, such as Saudi Arabia, promote and enforce religious requirements, and in other Islamic states, such as Pakistan, where organizations promote Islam and the faithful observance thereof. (In Pakistan, the major organizations that do this are Daa’wat-e-Islaami, Jamaat-e-Islaami, and Tabligh-e-Islaam).

Although these tendencies are very annoying for those outside of these religions, it is nonetheless a very old practice that shows no signs of abating.

Was this meant to be a reply in another thread? I don’t see anything particularly debatable in there.
