Going through my history of Chicagoland I found something I thought puzzling. Hyde Park and Oak Park were both created about the same time with influence from the railroads and both incorporated as villages / townships, existing as near suburbs of Chicago. So why was Hyde Park swallowed up by Chicago in 1889 while Oak Park managed to mainain its independence and identity?
