"The Constitution lists three requirements for senator: a minimum age of 30, U.S. citizenship for at least nine years, and that the senator, “when elected, be an inhabitant of that state for which he shall be chosen.”
Several states have imposed additional restrictions, but election law experts say they are constitutionally suspect."
There have been several challenges against New York’s election laws but has this carpetbagger challenge ever been brought up in NY or other states (referring to Federal Constitution residency requirement being only that you’re there when elected) ?
I just heard on the news: (I can’t recall if this was at the official announcement or some public gathering afterward) Hillary Clinton’s staff was supposed to key up the song “New York State of Mind” off of a Billy Joel “Best of…” album (track 5). Instead, they played track 2, “Capt. Jack”. (If you don’t know, that’s a song about masturbation.)
Wrong thinking is punished, right thinking is just as swiftly rewarded. You’ll find it an effective combination.
Though I’m not a fan of Hillary, myself, her decision makes a lot of sense. I mean, she’s spent the last eight years living in Washington, DC and the decade or so before that in Arkansas, but she’s not from either of those places. Even her running for Senator from Arkansas would seem a bit strange.
I don’t know what the status is of the Senators from Illinois (her original home, IIRC), but I’d imagine that state would have been another possibility.
Let’s be honest: she loves politics and wants to live in New York and Washington. Being the Senator from New York is probably just about her dream job. And her predecessor, Pat Moynihan, is doing his best to hand it over to her.
I’m just glad I live in Jersey: I can follow the campaign up close (and this will be a big money, big mudslinging, lotsa’fun campaign) without having to vote for either Hillary or Rudy in the end.
…but when you get blue, and you’ve lost all your dreams, there’s nothing like a campfire and a can of beans!
Put me down as a slightly bemused observer from Connecticut.
I would like to see a press conference where she is asked a question concerning an issue in a part of the state other than NYC.
“Mrs. Clinton, how do you feel we should deal with the concerns of the sod farmers of Batavia?”
Unfortunately, I think she has a very good chance of winning. Its not like her supporters seem to feel she will do a good job representing New York concerns, they are more interested in her ability to push the agenda she was stymied in as First Lady.

Has anyone else suggested that she may have been pressed into doing this, in New York I mean? Perhaps by Moynihan. Not that she would have resisted much, but Moynihan’s absence would probably leave NY to the opposition–that can’t have been missed at the higher level strategy sessions. Imagine a group looking around and saying, “Hmm, who can we fill this hole with?”<font color=#FCFCFC> Don’t!
She chose New York for several reasons. First, Arkansas doesn’t want her. And probably not Illinois. Mainly, I think she mistook the vapid adoration she got from Democratic party functions for real support. I think it was Torricelli, the NJ Senator, who suggested she run from NY (hey - why not from New Jersey?). Nita Lowey, who would probably have gotten the nomination, was a not a big enough player to resist Blonde Ambition and her stooges. Hillary also has the teachers union promoting her here, and that is one of the major powers in the state and the country for that matter. She also tested better than Rudy Giuliani when she started, but after her listening tour, her polls have dropped dramaticly. She chose Chappaqua because there is a 100% Democratic apparatachik town board whose loyality is to the party, not their constituants. If she sincerely wants to live in New York, why is she running for a job that would make her live in Washington? Senators or Representatives usually are identifed by party and state - Moynihan, D, NY. Hillary is really Clinton, D, nowehre.
