Why doesn’t the person who makes the accusation have to put his answer in perspective? The rules for insulting people is different in the Pit, and a majority of the hits for the word “retard” are from the Pit, and another large group are from threads like this…so I suppose this post counts.
A more realistic count would eliminate the two uses noted above, and only count the times it was used as an insult outside of The BBQ Pit. Of course this would involve actual research into its use, and not just a spotcheck on how many times the word has appeared.
This. While I’m not thrilled with Shagnasty’s use of the term, variants are used without objection on this board all the time. If the rule for “retard” is different, that should have been clarified with a note.
He should have said sorry when people called him on it, but there’s no rule about rescinding warnings for apologies (or giving them for not apologizing).
Eh. My answer was perfectly appropriate for the post I was responding to.
So you’ve done research on all the times it has been used, and found that no one has ever been noted or warned for it before? If not, Why don’t you go look up the answer and get right back to us?
If all you did was look up the number of times its been used(without regard to where it was used, or in what context), then how do you know it was never modded?
If you care, please do the research yourself. The “the person making the claim has to do any research that’s requested, however idiotic the request is” rule only exists in your mind. I made the claim, feel free to disprove it if you can.
I’ll be waiting right here for you to get back to us on that.
Is “libtard,” now off the table? How about calling “BigT,” by the variant that includes the word?
Calling Trump a retard – acceptable?
I’d like a serious answer from the moderators, please.
you can wait there until the cows come home for all I care-it was your(and DrDeth’s) unsubstantiated claim that this hasn’t been modded before. Care to explain how you came to that conclusion?
I’m agreeing with other comments in response to this. You (and DrDeth) are making a claim here: support it.
Please link to some of the many examples in which a person (poster, real person, or fictional character) was call a “retard” outside of The Pit that was not modded in some way. I’ve been here a long time and spend more time playing here than I should, am clearly someone to whom that word in that context would stand out like the words fag, kike, or similar, and would notice, and I can’t recall any. Posters here don’t seem to use that word in that way much outside of a Pit context. They know it is offensive. Now I’m sure there have been some that have happened, just like I am sure that other similar strongly offensive words have not been modded at 100% reliability, but a word “clearly” tolerated outside The Pit many many times? Not that I’ve seen. Maybe I’m wrong but your claim: back it up.
Helping you out here, I link to this IMHO thread in which the word was used multiple times and not modded. Of course it was a poll and discussion about how offensive the word was in which only 1 in 4 felt the word was fine. Disagreements had about banning it, or any word, but clear agreement that it was offensive. Still it was used outside The Pit and not modded there … Do you have many more?
On preview, your “prove my claim wrong” bit is pitiful. The links above show it being modded and discussed. I conclude your claim is made up bullshit.
It doesn’t matter whether it’s inside or outside the Pit, because hate speech isn’t allowed in the Pit either. And, you won’t get modded for calling someone off-board or some fictional character a c*** in the Pit or outside the Pit, because c*** isn’t hate speech.
So, you can’t call a poster a c*** anywhere, even inside the Pit. You can call a fictional character a c*** anywhere, even outside the Pit. You can’t use hate speech even inside the Pit.
Is “retard” hate speech? If so, that’s a new rule and, in any case, couldn’t be used in the Pit. Or, is it an insult, like “asshole”? Then, it can be used anywhere, but only inside the Pit to refer to another poster. Or, is it a special word like “c***”? Then, it can be used anywhere, but never to be directed at another poster.
What’s the rule?
I mostly agree with this, but if mods don’t care enough about whether someone is brain-dead or dead to change a thread title, I doubt they’re going to rescind and reissue a warning because of a slight difference in the reason for its issuance.
I’m still giggling over the idea of our board having a resident Forest Gump scholar, though.
Yes, good point. I think we’ve settled that the warning was not for an insult, so it’s irrelevant that it was describing a fictional character. The warning derived from a belief that “retard” is now far enough beyond the pale (an evolving process of awareness over recent years) that it falls into the same category as racial slurs, i.e. “hate speech” that cannot be used in any context. But if that’s the case, then surely every other derived “—tard” word must be banned too.
I don’t like the way Shagnasty used the word, and I think it’s to be discouraged. But if there’s a policy change here to zero tolerance of all “—tard” words, it should be consistent, and it seems like a major change. It’s unfair that he gets singled out with a straight Warning.
On topic modding.
A damn good reason why context matters when doing a search.
On-topic moderator note.
Another warning.
And another.
And yet another.
There’s more examples that were easy enough to find-do you really need me to list them all?
edited to add: If there was any supposed “policy change”, it was made a long time ago.
All of the warnings there were for insulting another poster. I don’t see any instance of any “----tard” word rising to the level of being considered hate speech (i.e. warnable in any context).
So Hate speech is allowed in the Pit? :dubious:
The last few dozen or so.
Speeding is against the law. Using “retard” is a brand new rule. It’s like driving 65 and finding they changed the speed limit to 55 but didnt bother to change the signs or tell anyone.
I readily admit that I do not quite parse the edge between offensive words that are not allowed outside of The Pit but are allowed in it, and words that are so beyond the pale that they are disallowed in The Pit as well. Or what qualifies as hate or just offensive jerkiness. This is more than an insult word like “asshole” because its use insult a group as whole. I personally think few words should qualify as “hate speech” and disallowed anywhere AND that casual use of offensive words to describe members of groups (be those members public figures, fictional characters, posters, or whatever) should be modded in some manner, ideally with some consistency.
I checked many of those and if “retard” was modded, it didnt come up in the search (i.e.) the Mod didnt quote that word) and also it was modded pages later.
Anyway, it’s been used hundreds of times without Mod action, even vs fellow posters.
Now can you show it was consistently modded before this?
I did, in my first post here in this thread. Now, can you show us when it was cosnsitently modded before this?
