Why Did You Vote for Who You Voted for? Confessions of the Politically Ignorant

In Washington - no major races.

I’m a reasonably well informed voter. I knew not just about the major initiatives, but the minor obscure legal technicality referendums. I even knew which district judicial candidates I wanted to vote for. (And ours are non-partisan. You can’t just vote D or R. You have to actually have looked something up about them.)

But somehow, in the middle of the who-knows-how-many circles I needed to fill in, I missed two of the charter amendments. I voted based on what the weekly newspaper (not even the daily newspapers, not even the respectable weekly newspaper) told me to.

Miller, shoulda voted for Camejo for Gov. Also, Carole Migden does make good laws. I didn’t know she was homosexual.

I think the more important stuff on election days like this is the local stuff, anyway. Over here the hottest campaign (judged by how much trash I got in the mail and how many giant signs I saw posted in empty lots around town) was for County DA, followed closely by City Council. Seems to me that’s where you see the real impact of your vote.

See! My system works!

I once voted for a guy named Absolutly Nobody, but I think Dicky boy has me beat

My votes were partially informed…some more than others!

In the gov. race I voted for Fernald, despite his being a Dem, because I hate Benson (who won, btw). Did I know much about Fernald’s platform? No. But he’s not Benson. Craig Benson ran a company named Cabletron, which had been one of the state’s major employers, right into the ground. Under his direction the company lost millions and lots of people (I forget how many hundreds) lost their jobs. Oh, sure, he bailed like a rat from a sinking ship shortly before the damage became public, but…then he has the ** nerve** to air ads saying he’s qualifed to be gov. given his “leadership capablities” learned from running the company!! I’m scared for our state. As long as Fernald didn’t come out for scarificing pets, he was going to get my vote.

In the senate race I voted for Sununu. A. he’s a republican and had a platform I more-or-less agreed with B. he’s ran against the current gov. Shaheen has done little good for the state over the past six years, and has done a fair amount of harm, so apparently I was amongst the majority who didn’t want to see what she’d do as a senator.

For congress I voted for Jeb Bradley, because Clark wants an income tax. That’s about the extent of it, since she really is “too liberal for New Hampshire” and I didn’t think much of the rest of her platform either.

For state rep I voted for Dick Green solely because he’s a Republican.

As for District reps, I couldn’t really name who I voted for. Basically, I voted for people who gave me fliers as I went in to vote. So I ended up voting for 7 Republicans, and the Dem with a really good sense of humor who talked to us for a couple of minutes before we went in.

I didn’t vote in any of the local elections, because I don’t know who any of the canidates are, and most of them were running without oposition anyway.

I voted “yes” on both questions, which basically boiled down to whether there should be a covention to dicuss amending the state consitution to allow congress to over turn the state surpreme courts’ decisions if they get a 2/3rds majority of voters behind them. Or something like that.
