Why didn't this early 90's song become a hit?

It sounds even more like “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”.

Yeah, I’m hearing bits of Shiny Happy People.

IMO, because it sucks.

Funny timing, I just put the Green Pajams’ version on a mix CD, been listening to the song a lot in the car lately.

I liked it…

Huh. I don’t get any of the REM comparisons here (sounds nothing like an REM song to me), but I could see the Breakfast at Tiffany’s comparison, although I hate that song, but love the Material Issue cover of Kim the Waitress.

…except that the guitars are prominent and have that twangy rickenbacker type sound. Maybe if you go back to early REM like “Murmur”…

I’d classify it more as “jangle pop” or power pop…I do have a weakness for power pop so I tend to like this type of music…

Now, was it hit material? Probably not…but it’s a decent tune…

I thought of REM, too.

I think a lot of people are hearing “Shiny Happy People” in there.

Fist verse of Waitress: Pressed lips and slender hips,… turning… in my…

Shiny Happy People: Meet me in the crowd,… people… people…

hmmm. REM never crossed my mind, but, OK.

It always seemed to me this has all the elements of a hit, especially at the time it came out. Catchy tune. Slightly quirky but nonchallenging lyrics. A little bit rough but mostly very polished. I like the mixture of fast and slow parts, and the way all the instruments come across equally, each being featured in different points of the song. The Sister Psychic version accomplishes those two things better than the other two versions, IMHO. The speed in particular: The Green Pajama version is too slow through out, and the Material Issue version is too fast for the slow part, or too slow for the fast part, difference is too much.
