Why didn't this early 90's song become a hit?

Kim the Waitress

It bothers me.

IMHO there isn’t anything hit worthy about it, and besides Kurt Cobain was around back then.

Good tune!

Reminds me of The Dangtrippers

Didn’t pay enough payola is my guess. For expose of the seamy side of the music business see Fredric Dannen’s 1991 book “Hit Men”.

Kind of blah. Not sure why it would be a hit. I don’t think ever heard it back then

If I had the hots for a waitress, or someone named Kim, maybe I’d like it more.

Huh, Sister Psychic doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page. Closest I could find is a reference to them on the The Green Pajamas page, where we find that Kim the Waitress is a cover, originally done by The Green Pajamas:

The same reason why the vast majority of good songs from little-known artists do not become hits. It did not happen to get noticed by anybody who might have had both the capacity and the motivation to publicize it sufficiently.

Oh, I remember that song very well. When I started college in the fall of 1993, somewhere in our new student package or another there was a compilation CD of alternative bands, and Sister Psychic’s version of “Kim the Waitress” was on it. Loved the song, and I thought I heard it on the radio not-too-long after in regular rotation on Q101.

Notice I say “thought.” “Kim the Waitress” indeed did get moderate-to-heavy airplay here in the Chicago market, but there was another version that came out at the same time that I just thought was an alternate version of the Sister Psychic cover, but turned out to be by another band: Material Issue.

Material Issue’s “Kim the Waitress”

Material Issue’s “Kim the Waitress” did chart, and peaked at #20 on the Modern Rock charts. As I said above, if you were in Chicago c. about mid-1994 and listened to Q101 (one of the alternative stations at the time), you’d be certain to hear it with regularity. Material Issue hail from the Chicago area, so what was on the radio here is probably skewed by a bit of homerism, but they did get plenty of national play (especially the songs “Diane” and “Valerie Loves Me.”)

The original, as mentioned above, is The Green Pajamas version.

Sounds like every generic college band that hit around that time. See also, Material Issue.

Hey! Material Issue wrote some damned good songs.

It’s really not all the good. There are thousands of songs just as good that never made any big success, and it clearly doesn’t stand out from anything else at the time.

For reasons we can’t begin to comprehend or codify.

It got some radio play here at least. Not a huge hit though.

It sounds like they ripped off an REM song.

Sister Psychic version or Material Issue? I never heard the former on the radio, while the latter was popular enough.

Yup, I heard a definitive REM influence in there.

I clearly remember this song being popular…on a local Seattle area community college station.

and that song about closing time? sounds like the same singer

He has a very boring singing voice.

HESH!!!

A hit is a hit!
