Does anyone have any idea where the expression cats have 9 lives came from?
Edgar Allan Poe said that in an interview.

But before that, there’s an italian ditto about cats with nine TAILS. Maybe the credo is derived from that.
I have it on good authority that you can kill a cat on the first try, given the determination to do so.
Cats are somewhat lucky in the fact that they can usually get themselves out of scrapes that would kill you or I, such as falling out a window. I would venture to say that this resilliancy is what has given cats the reputation of having nine lives.
Alternately, if you are dealing with a certain one of the fuzzy hoodlums residing in my home, one could possibly say that “a cat can eventually kill itself, given the determination to do so”, not that he has managed to euthanize himself to date, but sure i do wonder how he’s managed to live this long.
This fuzzball either has an (as of yet) unfulfilled deathwish or maybe he truly is “dumber than a box of rocks”. Recent exploits include: jumping into the dryer (un-noticed) with a load of laundry, jumping into the dishwasher (noticed) with a full load of dishes, and just added last nite we have: jumping into the pre-heated oven just ahead of the frozen pizza (can you say “singed cat”?). Oh, and did i mention his tendency to chew on power cords?

Otherwise we would have exterminated every one of these pompous, aloof little bastids long, long ago.
