Why do DVD Recorders always break down on me?

Since my Samsung died after a few good years of service- 12 months ago- I have had no end of trouble with DVD recorders.

I have had four- two Samsungs, a Panasonic, and an LG. Everyone of them had a problem. At least with the LG the service was great and it now seems to be working well.

But I can’t believe 4 in 12 months!

Same. I’ve just about flat out given up. I’m waiting for them to learn how to make one right, I guess. DVD recorders suck.

Bastards of things. Not that I am annoyed.

I’ve easily gone through more DVD burners than any other kind of device for my PC. They get used a lot which I’m sure contributes to the problem. Once I had a Sony burner completely fragment a disk being burned inside, sounded like a grenade went off. Surprisingly it still worked after that though I retired it just in case.

We bought my dad a DVD recorder 4 years ago, and he’s recorded well over 1000 movies with nary a glitch. It’s a Panasonic. I paid about $400 back then. I’m pretty sure the price would be about half that today.

I bought a Panasonic DVD recorder, I guess three years ago. Died exactly 30 days later. Dead. Power supply went bad. Took it back to Best Buy, and they said, OK, just get another one. I got another one of the same model.

Dead in exactly 30 days, also.

Took that one back, and swapped it for the same model. Again.

That one lasted more than 30 days!.

However, eight months later, after flawless performance up to that point. It created a corrupt disk. Eh, things happen, so I didn’t think much of it.

Then, a few disks later, it created another corrupt disk.

Then the corrupt disks started becoming more frequent.

After about 10 months, I had several in a row that were corrupt. Took it back to Best Buy. Well, since I had had it so long, I couldn’t just swap it out. They had to send it off to have it repaired.

No problem. So, in the meantime I purchased another recorder (Samsung). That one’s been kinda hit and miss from the get-go. Mostly hit, but occasionally it will create a corrupt disk. But the repaired Panasonic has been a champ since I got it back.

YMMV.

I have a super cheapo that I bought at Walmart (ilo brand) that I have had hooked up to my DVR for about 4 years or so…only problem that is now starting is that the open/close door function is a bit screwed up and it takes me about 3 or 4 tries to get a disc to stay in. Once in, it works fine.

I have an external burner for my computer that cost more. Worked fine for about two years…and now I can’t get it working at all. I keep meaning to go through the steps to see if the driver is working, etc. but just haven’t been motivated to do so…maybe I will try this week.
