I suppose its a dumb question…but psychologically what’s happening?
It’s something that always struck me as strange, but sometimes after class or at home I’ll see a paper where a girl has the same name written 10 or 20 times. Even my mom did it when I was young.
Yeah, as a guy meself (obviously), I couldn’t really say, but then if you look at my notes from college, you’ll see my name all over the place, along with the alphabet, doodles and scribbles, random limericks about fruit, etc. Being bored provides great motivation for that sort of thing.
Some girls write guys’ names over and over–names of the gentleman/men with whom they are currently romantically infatuated. I suppose it’s along the lines of “if I can’t feast my eyes on his face, at least I can look at his name and daydream about him.”
Also girls will sometimes write their name along with the surname of a guy they like, e.g. Mrs. Jane Smith, Jane Ellen Smith, Mrs. Jim Smith, etc, as if writing it over and over will cause their dream of marrying the guy to come true.
In either case it’s a form of mooning over a guy, along the lines of having his picture plastered everywhere, like Betty does to Archie Andrews.
Not that I would know, or anything, being all mature and not thirteen years old anymore, you know… :o
I have seen (and proabably done so myself) some girls write their friends names, too (not romantic interests). My explanations for that is that other people’s names are usually more fun to write, since they have different letters in different orders, and you can make them all loopy or pointy or whatever. I still like starting off letters to my best friend, Lissa (with 2 s’s) because there is so much potential to make that name look cool!
Being a girl, I write everything from my secret crush’s name to what the teacher is talking about in class. Why we do it, is similar to guys doodling, day dreaming, etc. It’s kind of a way to pass time away and when girls are thinking about something they sometimes without knowing it write what they’re thinking. They repeat the same words over and over because they are probably hooked on that subject, they’re thinking about it, or they’re passing time away. I personally just like the way my writing looks, and when I am bored I like to write what I am thinking. For instance, if I were thinking about a boy I probably would write, “boy”, “Dane”, " boyfriend", or any other related words.
I used to do that. I still do, actually, when I’m doodling to pass time at work. I do it with all sorts of words, actually, just because I like language, and words, and the presentation thereof.
I am a big doodler, period. (I feel dirty, somehow, saying that sentence. I, plain_jane… am a doodler.) heh
I have some of my old school work from grade school and highschool, and the papers are just infested with random words and drawings.
For me, it was two parts doodling to one part experimentation with my handwriting. It was in class, so I had a pen and paper handy and I was writing stuff. I’d notice my Rs or Ws looked funny, so I’d practice writing them. Writing the letters alone wasn’t considered real practice to me (how often do you write solo letters?), so I’d write out names that had those letters.
