I’m noticing some hybrid drives that combine ssd and HDD only have 8gb for the flash drive part.
Seeing that ssd memory is now only $0.25 a GB, why are they limited to 8 GB? Why don’t hybrid drives have 32 or 64gb of ssd memory? Is there no benefit of adding more than 8gb?
Do people make bigger flash memory on hybrid drives and I’m not seeing them?
I know some computers have both a ssd and HDD, but I’m more asking about hybrid drives.
Western Digital has 8, 16 and 24gb NAND flash memory options as shown in Wiki [hybrid drives] as of 2015.
In October 2015,[17] TarDisk introduced the plug-and-play dual-drive hybrid system “TarDisk Pear”, with flash memory size options up to 256 GB.
8gb commonly may be a cost driver. Also the gain in speed may not follow linearly with increased flash memory sizes (the performance gain while greater is not sufficient based on higher cost NAND memory).
Another factor is how the cache is managed. Is the operating system optimized for (or even recognize) a hybrid drive?
