That doesn’t seem helpful. “You can eat Jewish food, unless you can’t”? Might as well say “you can eat anything, unless you can’t”.

It’s a useful general guide since Jewish dietary laws are in most cases more restrictive than those of Islam, with the notable exception of alcohol. If something is kosher, it will also qualify as halal, with the exception of the requirement of the invocation of Allah during slaughter. Kosher slaughtering techniques are very similar to that used in halal slaughtering.

Comparison with Kashrut

There are some similarities between the Jewish dietary laws known as Kashrut and Muslim dietary laws. For example, both forbid all pork products, both prescribe certain methods for slaughtering animals and poultry, and both forbid the consumption of blood and mandate that it be drained from animals after slaughter.

On the other hand, the list of kosher animals is far more restrictive including mainly naturally domestic animals and only fish which have both fins and scales. There are many differences such as the extremely strict kashrut laws on the consumption of insects (most vegetables must be checked before consumption) and the many factors which an animal is subjected to after slaughter to make certain an animal is kosher. There are also material differences. Islam forbids alcohol, while alcoholic consumption is allowed in kashrut (although there are strict rules that govern the kosher winemaking process). Muslims are allowed to eat the vast majority of seafood, while in kashrut all shellfish, molluscs, and selected other varieties of fish are forbidden (included in the prohibition of eating insects). Any combination of dairy and meat products is forbidden, whereas this is considered halal.

The Qur’an 5:5 declares that the food of Jews and Christians is halal. Many interpret this reference to imply that the dietary laws are similar enough to (though far less restrictive than) those regulating kashrut that Muslims can consume kosher meat and other food products when there are no halal alternatives. Kosher products that include alcohol among their ingredients are still haraam.

In certain instances, some Islamic authorities have permitted Muslims to rely upon kosher certification (particularly in regard to slaughtering) when halal food is otherwise unavailable. This view is subject to debate, however, and is rejected by many, for a variety of reasons.

I don’t know why the food of Christians was allowed, since AFAIK most Christians did not observe Jewish dietary laws by the time of Mohammed.

On the latest episode of Le Show there was more information. Apparently, the mayo is made in Israel and that’s why it’s verboten. And it appears that they are killing people for such things. Shearer read accounts of two falafel vendors being killed for selling falafel! And ice vendors being killed for selling ice. Why? Because those things weren’t available in Mohammed’s time, and thus are evil. (As one Iraqi put it, “Neither were Kalashnikovs, but I didn’t point that out to them, since I didn’t want to be killed.”) You can hear a RealAudio clip of Shearer reading the story here.

Sorry I started it.
The point was that a Muslim could eat some Kosher food and be sure of obeying Islamic dietary laws. One more irony of the conflict in the Middle East.
