Why do Painters Wear White?

Why in the world do most painters wear white? Where did this tradition start? What good does it really do? They use all different colors of paint so their clothes looks splattered anyway!

Why don’t they just wear regular colored coveralls?

WAG: The most common paint color is white?

Not sure about house painters, but I had a painter friend who always wore white when she painted because she could mix colours on her clothes (and match them to the white canvas)when she ran out of room on her palette.

We’ve had this Q before (and recently). Use the search function to find the not-so-old thread.

IIRC, the concensus was that, because most house paint colors are whitish, that white coveralls would hide most drips and splashes best.

WAG - does it have anything to do with solvents and bleach? If you started at blue, for instance, wouldn’t you end up with white after you tried to clean the paint off of them as much as possible?
