Britney Spears fetishized the contrast between her obviously-sexually-mature body, her age, and certain porn tropes which are rather popular in our culture (aka “naughty schoolgirl needs to be taught a lesson – in fucking”).
What she did not do was attempt to actually look 12 while singing “hit me baby one more time.” Men who are not actual pedophiles would find that disturbing. Female singers can appeal to young males by projecting an air of confident sexuality. Male singers, by contrast, can appeal to young girls by being sexually non-threatening.
If Bieber wanted to peddle his I’m just a widdle baby boy schtick to the teeny boppers, more power to him. It’s his bizarre attempts to edge up his act by associating with such teeny bopper faves as the author of the rap classic “Move Bitch.” (Move Bitch, get out the way!, Oh Ludacris, you truly do speak for a generation…) that generate amusement or revulsion.
So actually looking young is worse than dressing up as a porn version of adolescent sexuality? :dubious:
If he’s trying so hard to look and seem young, then why is he trying to do more adult music? Isn’t it possible that he just looks young naturally? He doesn’t act or dress in any way that’s younger than his age, so the ‘looking young’ thing has to be natural.
Just thought Id add my opinion on the matter! Personally I dont like him because he comes across as cocky. I also think that because the media have tried to make him out to be a good singer when hes just average makes people have an bad attitude about him. I also think that because he is everywhere people are just fed up of seeing his face.
This. I work with high school kids and he’d fit right in alongside the kids. There are plenty of sophomores and juniors who look younger than they are, especially the boys. Honestly, he wouldn’t stand out at all.
And that he’s singing about sexuality. . .what? All of his songs are sweet little babby babby babbbbbby I love you giiiiiiiiiiirl songs. Though maybe I missed his guest verse on Ludacris’ “Sex Room.”
I don’t really understand the extremity at either end of the spectrum. But then again, I’m not a teenage girl or disturbingly preoccupied with hating on teenage boys.
As an aside: Speaking of teenage boy pop stars (or in this case, former teenage boy pop stars), anybody seen what Aaron Carter is looking like these days?
I always thought he was one of the nicer looking teenybopper stars when he was younger.
I think the justin bieber haters belong to one of two groups: those who envy him and those who want to sound cool.
Group #1: There will always be people who have the sour grapes syndrome like the people who say they hate the concept of being popular when deep down they desperately want to be popular. I think there are also many musicians who have been trying for years to make it big in the music industry with no success and they resent the fact that bieber became so successful at a young age. I vaguely remember reading about an actor who complained about a young actor receiving an award at such a young age when actors like him who have worked for so long do not get awards.
Group #2: There are also people who like to diss whatever is popular because they think it’s cool and hip to do so.
Also, not all classic rock fans hate and diss bieber. I’m a classic rock fan and bieber’s type of music does not interest me but I don’t hate him. If people like to buy his CDs then I say let them. It’s their money and they have a right to choose which CD to buy.
The people who are saying he hangs out with rappers and it’s weird to be part of their image - Usher’s label pursued him, and he was asked to sing for Usher. I’m going to guess either the publicity machine or just Usher’s posse got him in with the rappers, it doesn’t appear he pursued the rappers. Cite.
