Young celebrities behaving badly: is it all PR?

Lindsay Lohan – and more recently, Justin Bieber – seem to constantly be in news for misbehaving: driving drunk, not paying for services, etc., etc. I guess my question is, how much of this is “young party kid with no rules/supervision and way too much money,” and how much of it is “Okay, Justin, on December 11th, you’re scheduled to start a bar fight in Berlin and walk out on your tab.”?

I couldn’t honestly care less about celebrities like them, but if they’re mostly PR stunts, what’s the goal other than keeping them in the news? Doesn’t “Biebs” want to keep sort of a clean image so the parents of his fans will keep buying them albums and concert tickets?

I would argue “it depends.” Lohan seems a real trainwreck; Bieber is making some bad decisions - but Miley Cyrus is 100% pure calculation…

You know, looking back to the behavior of rock stars in the 60s (and later), I don’t think the current crop of young celebrities is really all that outrageous. Justin or Miley has yet to roll a car into a hotel swimming pool as far as I know.

I suspect that some of that may go on among low-level celebrities for whom any visibility is good. They start a feud with someone bigger, for instance. If you’re on the top, though, like Bieber is and Lohan was, there’s little further upside in staging those kinds of hijinks.

Lohan was a huge star who has dropped to near-unemployment. She has lost a ton of potential income by being basically unable to show up for work consistently.

Let’s compare…

Lindsay Lohan - Did enough coke to drop a bull elephant, constantly threw temper tantrums on movie sets so she stopped getting work, accused of stealing jewelery, drove drunk and ran her car into other people multiple times.

Justin Bieber - He’s a 19-year old boy who really likes sex. Obviously, he’s the first one in history.

Miley Cyrus - Appeared on a kid’s show when she was a tween. Then she grew up and got a tattoo and performed a mildly sexually suggestive dance on TV.

Which of these is not like the other?

Maybe this is more telling about my age and increasing ignorance of pop culture, but really? I never heard of Lindsey Lohan until she became a train wreck.

Part of it may also be an attempt to shed the child part of “child star” title and to be taken seriously as an adult talent. It certainly seems that is Miley’s goal.

Huge star as starlets go, sure. After Mean Girls, she could have had her pick of movie projects, I think.

Yes. Apart from La Lilo, they haven’t actually done anything bad, really.

Perhaps their PR people are telling them to act the fool, but it’s far more likely that they’re just young people with more money than sense and the press jumps on every occasion they seem to have less sense.

To the extent that Miley Cyrus can be included in the OP for shaking her butt a but, despite that being the only thing she’s ever done that’s not wholesome.

He also pissed in a mop bucket in a restuarant kitchen and then laughed his way out the back door.

He also likes to drive really fast up and down his street. So much so that multiple neighbors complained to the city. Afterwhich he spit in one of the neighbors face and threatened to kill him.

He also likes to drive way too fast on the freeway.

He also likes to drive without a license.

He’s also been photographed multiple times drinking the booze (he’s 19)and smoking the weed.

He also jacked a security guards bike at a casino in Vegas.

He gets into fights with the paparazi.

So maybe he’s not doing coke like Lindsay but he still has the attitude that he can do whatever he wants and he’s above everyone else.

Some of that is not even bad (19 and drinking booze? You don’t say! A Canadian drinking alcohol at 19!) and some of it may not even be true. The press have been known to lie. Note that I don’t like Bieber (don’t hate him, either, but his music is terrible) but that doesn’t make me believe every tall tale about him.

Lindsay Lohan is a horrible mess, Justin Bieber is just a douchebag and Miley Cyrus is trying to be the next Madonna with about a tenth of her talent.

Before reading the rest of this thread, I was doing some charity Christmas shopping today, and saw some little-girl PJs that had a picture of Justin Bieber on it and it was captioned, “The Future Mrs. Bieber”.

Oooooookay.

Anyone remember when Prince Harry wore a Nazi uniform to a costume party?

When Guns N’Roses were at the height of their fame in the early 1990s, I read a biography of Judy Garland, and she gave Axl Rose a run for his money regarding some of her behavior. She lived exactly 20 years too long to be a member of “Club 27”.

IMHO:

Cyrus - crafted PR move. I mightn’t’ve gone the exact way she (or her 50 year old exec minders) wanted, but they’re reaping the benefits. Her famous move is not shocking to me so much as puzzling. Finger, bears, tongue? Oh, and I read something (no cite, can’t find it) from someone involved that the entire thing was scripted. Including the tongue.

Bieber - totally manufactured to be semi-edgy (as much as a Canadian can be) while mixed with his dumb youth. He hasn’t done too much has he, except for regular teenage substance use, occasionally doing something stupid, and spending like he’ll die tomorrow. I am unsure whose fault the questionable fashion decisions are. Seriously, you look like you’re wearing shitty diapers all the time.

Lohan - substance abuse problems. It was easier to blame on youth but now she’s not as young. She’s stuck in a pattern, as addiction does.

Bynes - (she still relevant?) IANA psychologist, but mentally ill. Makes it a little easier to feel sorry for her, it remains to seen whether she will treat it.

According to Cyrus the tongue thing, which she has been doing for years, came about because she finds it embarrassing to smile for photographs. And now photographers ask her to do it.

A choreographed dance routine was performed according to a script?!?!?!?

Smartass. There’s what you right down and clear with the suits, and what you actually do. SNL certainly didn’t know what Elvis Costello or Fear were going to do.

If you gave a spoiled brat 14 year old unlimited money, “friends” and drugs, then removed all semblance of accountability for their actions, what else do you think you’d end up with?
