I’ll accept that point, but let me ask this again. Every morning people drive to work in rush hour traffic at up to 65 mph with a half to two car lengths between them and the car ahead and behind. So why am I incorrectly assuming that others aren’t capable of driving a car with me tailgating half a car length behind them for just a few seconds at 65 to let them know:
“hey dumbass, this is the fast lane”
OK, I think we’re getting upset about two different things here, since the worst cases of tailgating I’ve been involved in have taken place on two lane roads, and the two worst have involved young men under 25 if not 20. I did see a fellow flash his lights and honk his horn once because I wasn’t moving fast enough in the fast lane, but traffic in both lanes was moving below the speed limit as far ahead as I could see, there was no room to get over (about 1 or 2 car length gap between cars in both lanes) and even if there was room, moving over was illegal because we were in a tunnel. You read it right. This fellow decided to honk his horn inside a tunnel to get me to move faster than the cars ahead of me. By the way, in my city for reasons which have yet to be explained, people slow down in tunnels, but that’s a separate, local rant. Tailgating them doesn’t help, and it’s too noisy to yell, “It’s you! It’s you!” (I haven’t heard anyone admit to slowing down in tunnels.)
Karma, in this case, paid out. It turned out that this fellow and I were apparently going to the same baseball game. As I passed him stuck in stop and go traffic for one lot while I travelled easily past him, I couldn’t resist giving him a nice, friendly wave. What can I say? Blowing his horn in a tunnel was particularly bad, and a yellow Geo Metro convertible’s distinctive. Oh, and yes, you’d better believe I travelled in the slow lane until I got up to speed! On the other hand, she would do 70 mph and more like a dream.

Whatever! this is exactly my point, you are endangering lives and property on the road and you have the BRASS BALLED NERVE to respond “whatever”.
On an interstate highway where there are signs that say “slower traffic keep right” the law means EXACTLY that the fastest person on the road has the right of way.
My consolation here is that you are obviously a kid who one day will learn the actual rules of the road or be killed (it is my hope that you do not take out any innocent people in the process).

Actually I am not a kid, I am 25, been driving nearly 10 years and have no tickets, and no wrecks. Near misses included, except for the guy that had to drive in the ditch to avoid me. His fault. Can you say the same thing there pal? Have you driven for 10 years without a ticket or a wreck? Probably not.
Would you care to provide a cite that says “speed limit laws only apply if you are not in the fast lane”. The fastest person on the road is obviously speeding, so they DONT have the right of way. Idiot boy indeed.

Grow up and admit that when you speed you are breaking the law, even when I speed I know it. I never drive below the speed limit. (barring slowing down and speeding up from things like traffic lights and stop signs, but those are probably laws you don’t follow either.)

And don’t give me that crap about how there is a law that allows you to speed up past the speed limit to pass a person. This doesn’t apply for long distances, that are implied when talking about using the “passing lane”. Otherwise you would have to speed up, pass, get out of the passing lane, get back in, pass, get back out.
Give me any cite that says the passing/fast lane is allowing speeders right of way. (hint- you wont find one, because it is not out there)
Left Lane Restrictions
SB 52 states that a vehicle may not use the left lane if they are pulling a trailer or semi-trailer - regardless of size. In addition it states that motorists must pass on the left and when a motorist is being passed they may not increase their speed until the passing motorist has completely passed their vehicle. It also states that if a vehicle in the left lane is being overtaken by another vehicle, the motorist must yield to the overtaking vehicle by moving safely to the lane at their right
It clearly states that you must move to the right if a vehicle in the left lane if overtaking you. There are no exceptions to this law that say “unless the car coming up behind you is exeeding speed limit”.
No, but these laws are written with other laws in mind. Namely the speed limit laws. Again, your cite does not say anything about letting people speed. It is refering to people that are obviously going slow in the fast lane. Slow as in under the speed limit. Your cite is not valid because it does not meet the paramaters of “saying it is ok to speed”. It says NOTHING about speeding or the allowance of excess speeds.
I realize I sound like a complete hypocrite, what with me speeding talking about speeders. This isn’t the case though. I am only bitching about speeders that tailgate me and acknowledging that I speed, and realize it is breaking the law. If I am not in the left lane, I could care less if you are doing 120, as long as you are not riding my ass. When those people doing 120 think I should move out of the left lane because they think they have right of way, when I am busy passing all the slow people myself, is when I get pissy.
Read it again. It does no such thing. It ONLY says the law requires you to move out of the passing lane when someone overtakes you. It does not mention ANYTHING about speed limits, over or under. Zippo. Nada. Nothing.
You are obviously not understanding. Exceeding the speed limit is breaking the law, however, if you do not yield to a car that is overtaking you in the left hand lane, you are also breaking the law.
It works kind of like this -
Blowing a red light is grounds for a ticket - so is parking in a no parking zone.
Robbing a bank is against the law - so is burglerizing a home.
Tailgating is dangerous and against the law - NOT YIELDING TO AN OVERTAKING CAR IN THE LEFT HAND LANE IS ALSO DANGEROUS AND AGAINST THE LAW, NO MATTER HOW FAST OR SLOW EITHER CAR IS GOING.

It isn’t clear to me right now, that is for sure. I think it is because your logic seems messed up. So If traffic is doing 65, and I am doing 70-75 in the fast lane, passing all the slow people, and you come up on me at 90, I am supposed to get out of your way? Even though you are speeding. Bullshit.
Tell you what. Since it seems unlikely that you are a Utah state trooper, and one has not popped up in this thread, I will write the Utah State Patrol and ask them. We shall see what they have to say about it. (whether I am right or wrong I will post it)

Unless you want a ticket. This isn’t to say that the speeder won’t receive one either, but you are also breaking the law if you don’t move over.
