Why do so many deer get hit by cars?

I was just thinking about that. They may not really know how close a car is…possibly?

Is that why in nature documentaries predators always seem to be able to sneak up so closely before they spring?

I see. So you can’t form plurals like wilds (e.g. “wilds of Africa”), boards, cards, fears, rears, mirrors, lads…

Interesting how many reasons have been offered for deer behavior and why deer get hit/cross highways/etc.
But I’d guess there are plenty of people who still wonder WHY drivers can’t manage to avoid them. I know I did before my deer encounter. For those lucky souls who have yet to hit one–Congratulations! But don’t imagine that it has much to do with your driving skill.

Here’s my story, which is probably fairly typical:

I’m cruising along at about 70mph, early morning but still plenty of light to see by, focused on cars and the long stretch of road in front of me, basically minding my business.
Out of the corner of my eye, I see movement on my right and suddenly become aware that a deer is crossing immediately in front of my car. In a flash, I see his expression as he turns his head slightl to his left and observes the car hurtling at him.
His train of thought is something like this–“Ok, I’m smelling that hot little doe. I wonder why she decided to cross this hard, loud surface? Boy, it’s getting pretty loud. Uh oh, here comes one of those metal beasts, I’d better hurry along. Ummm, it’s getting pretty damn close, I’d better high tail it. OH SHIT, here it is, I can just make it I think! Or, not. FUCK that hurts.”
My train of thought is “Movement!, Shit–a deer! Hit the brakes now//Damn–I’ve already hit it. Fuck!–is everyone ok? How’s my car?”
All of this takes place in well under a second. In fact, I’ve hit the deer and my airbags have deployed and are deflating, all BEFORE I’ve made the split second decision to hit my brakes, which probably turned out to be the safer option.

$2,000. to the car, most if which is for reinstalling airbags.

So, I’m less cocky now and completely sympathetic with and understand how perfectly safe, reasonable drivers can hit deer.
